So I’ve seen countless posts about the transmission being a problem with these vehicles and just wanted to share my experience. I just purchased a used 2019 lariat in Washington state.. the night I pulled off the lot I noticed that pulling off from a complete stop the truck had a problem catching low gears and felt weak accelerating ( didn’t feel this on the test drive at all) . So I swing back by the shop the next morning to let the service department know. They brush it off as fords “ adaptive learning “ me having no experience whatsoever with ford vehicle and having no codes/ check lights I brush it off. Next day the problem is worse, driving the truck felt weak and the shifting was extremely hard and clunky so I go back to the shop and ask them are they positive it’s not the tranny. They assured me it’s not and I asked a tech to simply drive it for 5 min. Of course the moment he drives it starts the issue, he tells me I was right and there is a problem. They tell me it feels as if a tune was set on the car from the previous owner and them disconnecting the battery messed it up. They scheduled me with ford for a factory tune but the ford was booked out 3 weeks from the date. I get to the 3rd week and start up the truck. It barely has enough power to back out the drive way and started to stall and I got a code ( p2708 ). I immediately swing back by the service department and show them and they pretty much told me they will be replacing the entire transmission. I bring them the truck this Thursday and I’m set to get it back next Tuesday. Hopefully this resolves the issue. Truck is right at 66k miles.

Here is the definition of P2708 DTC.

P2708 Shift Solenoid "F" Stuck On MIL/Continuous F clutch stuck on due to a non-electrical fault. Multiple attempts to apply F clutch failed.

Yeah I was able to read it on the code scanner I have. They suggested the full replacement ($7k fix )

It was under a dealer’s courtesy warranty. 50/50 so I would have to pay about $3500. It was definitely my fault for being cheap and. It getting the warranty but given how soon I came back the dealer offered to cover the entire $7k if I were to purchase a 36k mile warranty

I am not sure that it would need a new transmission for that problem. Did you buy it at a Ford dealer? Was any troubleshooting done before they said it needs replaced?

Yeah they said they were following the step-by-step ford diagnosis for that code. Hell they may have known more about the truck then they told me.

Just read it, so even after the full transmission replacement you still had issues? Hoping that won’t be the case for me. The new transmission comes in tomorrow from fords OEM shop. I won’t allow them to tell me it’s just the adaptive learning again cause that’s BS

No issues at all after DFPE sensor replacement. However all this has made me think hard about purchase of extended warranty purchase.

Because of the cost of work on any vehicle I always purchase extended warranty, I would do the same if I bought a Toyota, that’s just me. I’m paying to not have to worry. I have a 7 year 125K warranty on my Ranger when that is up I’ll replace the Truck with another. Lots think I’m throwing money away! I don’t disagree, but I’ve never been stranded and had to worry about cost. Everything is factored in the budget. It’s the way my life is anyway.

Gents, looking for some advice on a similar problem. At cold temps -20 c or more, I had lots of late shifts. I wasn't to excited. Last week I got to a stop sign 300 yrds from my house. As I accelerated from the stop the truck went to up shift and I lost all power, not a single light came on, motor didn't rev. After a second, she thunked into gear move forward and then 50 ft later went to up shift again, NOTHING. After a second, back into gear with a thud and off I went without any more problems. I have 3000 km left on my powertrain warranty. Took it to the deal and "we can't replicate the problem".

I've been doing some reading and some say the sensors can cause similar issues. But I was quoted 13k Canadian for a new transmission installed. I like the truck, I know how it was used, but nervous. Is there anyway to tell a sensor issue from the transmission problems? I have a nice deal on a new 2024 Full sized EXT on paper, but the truck won't last so I need to move if I'm gonna.
