heres a question on life cycle of the tortoise and turtles in general. Has anyone ever found a turtle shell after they have passed away?

Of the thousands of turtles near where i live and grew up, i have never ever seen a turtle shell skeleton. I would assume its easier in the desert
found literally every other creatures skeleton, but never an elusive turtle.
Do you mean just the shell ? I have found these guys shells before , but not the rest of him ...

These are the little guys always crossing the road here... Eastern Box Turtle I believe...

yeah just the shell. i assume its mostly like bone and doesn't disappear too quickly. We have alot of snapping turtles around....would be really cool to make a mailbox out of one of those shells. The neighbors would be aghast at the horror of it.

One of my most interesting finds was a Cariboo in the Canadian artic, that had fallen into a crevice in the rocks. he was about 6ft down, his antlers wedged in and the carcass hanging below.
the remaining skin and fur was holding most of it together, but it was a nearly complete skeleton otherwise. With no foragers or bears able to gnaw on what was left, it was there slowly falling apart over time.
Cool and yuk at the same time , but , now I am wondering ? about turtle Skellys, do they crawl out before they die? Why no turtle skull near shell ?

Hahah he's liking that ?... eat once a day ? Can you sit out a couple days of food and water or they need attention every day ? It kind of sounds like a slow motion doggo , patrolling the house , finding favorite spots , different moods ... you know of any good documentarys on these guys ?

Hi NB,

Kale does not do very well if left out, so we feed him once a day at 3pm (just before Beer:30 cocktail time)...usually have to wake him up and it takes him a few minutes and a couple yawns (Very cute to see him yawn) to wake up and start moving...then we put down a plate and he sniffs it for freshness and starts to eat if he finds it satisfactory... We try to guess about the right amount of kale plus a bit more so when he is full we know because he left some on the plate... Then place a dish of cut up strawberry for a bit of desert which he relishes..

Since the scientific community only started a detailed study of the Sonoran Desert Tortoise in 2016, initiated by AZ Dept. of Game and Fish in conjunction with the Sonoran Desert Museum and the University of Arizona, I am not aware of any documentaries on them. I have done quite a bit of research on them and I teach a class on them as part of OLLI/U of Arizona. Osher Life Long Learning Institute.. The class is quite popular and fills up fast when registration begins... Margie assists by carrying Tito to each attendee for a little one on one time with these unusual animals. Most people have only seen picutres of them so they photograph and touch Tito. I think he is one of the most photographed Tortoise in Pima County if not the entire State of Arizona.

Best,
Phil

Sounds like YOU my need to make said documentary sir ! Or perhaps a good quality video of the class ... i am 100 % now coming to AZ in a few years , absolutely have to witness this , hell , might even retire there , im sure Dave will let me stay with him till i get settled in , 60 years of mountains going straight to the desert might be a little shock though , i appreciate all the info and pics , and putting up with my nonsense (cant help it or i would )
