Smoke visible at night on new car normal?

Hi all.

On my new 2.2 diesel. When a car is behind me at night I can see what looks like quite a bit of light smoke/steam in their headlights when I accelerate from 1st gear.

Is this normal for a new diesel?

Hi Ruben,

When cold, a diesel can emit white smoke, which is unburned diesel. Modern Diesels are supposed to be calibrated to eliminate white smoke, but under some circumstances it might be visible in darkness with direct illumination, or as RP states, condensation in a cold exhaust system, particularly as diesels run much cooler than gasoline (petrol) engines. Our original F-series 6.9L natural aspirated Diesels would look like steam clouds when cold started in O°C temps.

Blue smoke....not good.....

Do you know more or less on what mileage yours stopped? If I pull away to overtake I can also clearly see it. Looks like steam but smells like smoke. Its a very thin cloud.

I am on 1300km as of today.

I'm from up north JHB side. Its fairly hot but the nights are about 23 degrees C. It definitely looks like steam and not thick smoke. It does it when the engine is hot or cold.
