After installing the tailgate strut, my cables now have about a 1/2" of slack each.

Have you checked for fuel in the oil? Maybe a lean to the passenger side? All the missing items since 2019? Crappy suspension, misaligned panels, antenna is too tall, the back end sits too high, too much air in the tires, no heated sun visors, the color of the paint clashes with the valve stems on the wheels...
I'm sure if you look harder you can find something else wrong, you just aren't trying hard enough. :rolleyes:

After installing the tailgate strut, my cables now have about a 1/2" of slack each.
I recommend taking a closer look at damper install to make sure it was done correctly. When I installed mine it changed which cable was tight, but there should be one tight cable. Otherwise the weight of the tailgate and anything on it is being first supported by the damper instead of the cable.

I think mine did this when I first installed the damper but stopped after I pushed down on the tailgate a few times.
