How is the "swing out" portion of the floor supported? Is it just held up by the ladder being staked into the ground underneath it? Or is there something else supporting it as well?

The ladder supports it, has large rubber feet. Wouldn't need to be staked unless you were on some strange/awkward terrain. The ladder ratchets out so you just set to the height needed
