In the original knot, the cross of the plug side is over the rest of the line (ROL). By creating this extra loop, this cross can slide between the two layers of the ROL, sliding out "between" the two knots which now exist. Since both knots depend on that one cross to exist, once it slides out from between them, neither knot exists anymore, and you can pull the ROL through. You can really see this in action at about the 11-12 second mark.

Mind you, this is a needlessly complicated (but fun to watch) way to do this, because that plug never went through that handle in the first place, meaning that it was the ROL which got fed through the handle; the easiest thing to do would have been to backtrack the ROL through the knot, since you're still going to have to feed it through the handle anyway.

I was always confused by this. I always wondered 'How did the plug get thru in the first place?'

Nope, just been involved with Scouts for over 35 years, and knots are one of my things; especially when it comes to knots that no one else can untie, so I've learned to read the lines. The best is when any of the females in my family hand me a clump of necklaces & bracelets, and say "Can you untangle these?" Actually, I find it fun, and derive a certain satisfaction from sorting out the mess.
