I am fairly sure that it is the threads on the tank that they are saying are distorted.
What I cannot understand is that I have now found a number of videos where the plastic retaining ring has been reused and fits without issue. It would appear that this is the same tank as used from 2012+...

REMOVED FUEL TANK. REMOVED FUEL PUMP & PLASTIC NUT. THREADS SWELLED SO NUT
WOULD NOT SCREW BACK ON.
