"You want to lock the torque converter as quicky as possible. Torque Converter slip heats the transmission up quite quickly. I think probably 70% of the heat in the transmission is generated from the torque converter. It is really inefficient."
While true, the torque converter does create the...
Here's a pretty good paper on the painfully deficient 10R80 in the Modern Ranger.

When my truck is beyond the warranty. I'll be saving myself a giant tow bill and upgrading every aspect of this poorly...
The engine will start even though I get the low battery message the key, and also, the proximity lock works fine as does the remote start, too. But ever since I started putting the key into the cup holder the Entertainment system boots up ever time.
The second fob doesn't seem to change any of...
I think there may be something to this. When I put the key into the cup holder as if it was dead, the screen boots 3-4 times faster and I dont get the low battery message either. I havent tried the other fob yet, but I will, just to see if there's a difference.
I get a "Low key battery" warning about 2-3 times a week. Key has a brand new battery in it. But beyond that, I have to reboot the entertainment/nav screen using the power and FF buttons at least every other day. Sometimes a couple times per day.
California wont even allow you to offer a "warranty". It's insurance. And it's mind bogglingly expensive. I got a quote for mine last week at $5700 bucks for 4 more years or 75,000 miles, but they claimed it was a new car, bumper to bumper type coverage.
Just so everybody understands, the CEL, Check Engine Light, is always going to be in reference to a change in emissions. It could be something that loads up the CATs, oil in the cylinders changing the HCs, a drop in 02, a hike in 02...anything outside the parameters set. And it's government...
The low speed chug comes from the idiotic transmission shift strategy, up-shifting and locking the converter at obscenely low rpm and speed. Switching to shorter tires will just cause the same scenario but at lower actual speeds. If you change the TCM for the shorter tires, it'll still do it...
The main issue I'm running into, or better described as the torque converter isn't unlocking when coming to a stop. In the mornings, when it's cold, as I roll to a stop for the same intersection, at about 3-4 mph, it feels like I hit something. If you've ever driven a manual transmission car and...
Has anyone else done this? Something tells me this impacts the charging system.
All he's doing is unplugging a sensor off the negative side, but if it's the battery monitor, it could be full fielding the alternator and an AGM battery hates that.
This is super interesting to me. What size gauge would go in this? 'Im looking for Water temp (with actual numbers), oil pressure, boost and Volts.
The one angled at the driver is exactly what I'd get. Did you ever make this?
What it has, is not a gauge. It's a vague range, almost idiot light. And the indicator line in that thing is contrasted horribly. Is it in the middle, or above the middle, below?
It's just an F in execution.
Sonnax already has EVERYTHING you'd need to make this trans bullet proof, mechanically. But the factory shift strategy would remain.
If it was me, D would probably be start in 2nd unless in tow or sport, then go 4-5-7-9-10 and I wouldnt lock the converter up until the vehicle ran 50+ for at...
I just looked at mine, it was rotted. The only thing tethering the sensor was the harness. This is known as an engineered failure point. This practice is unethical at very best. But this thing is designed to fail, forcing you back to the dealership.
I really like the 21mpg I get in this truck...
This is interesting. The fact that this hyper complicated "budget truck" doesn't have jack for gauges staggers me.
This is the first vehicle Ive owned in at least 40 years that didn't have a Voltmeter, oil pressure gauge and a water temp gauge.
Running an OBDII scanner through a phone, to...
You cant touch a Ranger Lariat in California for less than $30K. Unless it's used and past the warranty, like mine. When they came out in 2019, the dealers around here were marking them up over sticker. Which Ford allows. Toyota, Lexus..cant do that. I was a service writer for Ford, and I sold...
I also drive mine in Tow mode. It's a completely different shift pattern.
It actually seems to go 12345678910 in tow mode.
As opposed to drive were it'll go 134-5 or 6 depending on the mood, then 7,8,9,10
when in just normal drive.
I dont know about you guys, but if I just pop it in drive...
The Transmission shift strategy on these things is mind bending.
The "D" clutch is engaged in P, R,1,2,3,4,6,7,8,10. Where the problem lies is in its oncoming clutch responsibilities when engaged in 6th gear as the oncoming clutch.
If the 10R80 transmission had evil twin redheaded...
For what it's worth, Ive seen a LOT of differentials setup poorly from the factory. The 8.8 in my 89" Convertible Mustang took a dump at 1400 miles. The diff in my Dads older Ranger took a dump at 21,000, the rear diff in my 96" Dodge 4X4 Ram had the yoke loosen up and loose the preload on the...
