The grabber is stronger. The grabber is on the base layer, not up the side wall. On the sidewall the screw head creates a hazard to damage the rope, and can allow binding if the rope gets pulled under. Even if you do not want to install it, it's worthwhile to buy one for emergency repair...

I just glanced through the Smitybuilt manual. My first recommendation is forget about the mounting screw and order a Bubba Rope Grabber mount. Leagues better in every way...
