i'm not familiar with a 2017 ranger but I previously had a Sport Trac and had the steering wheel modules go bad. I found the modules on Amazon and changed them. Was not that hard to do.
Usually when I get the battery saver warning in the display because I have made a lot of short trips. I just check the Alternator output to make sure it is charging correctly and I don't have an alternator issue.
Whenever I get a message affecting the battery/charging system I check the alternator output with the system reader app (DashOBD) I installed into Android Auto. Get the readout on the screen.
