  1. Transmission Woes

FWIW, Took my Ranger in last week for a warranty review of the trans, for poor shift behavior. 59k. They said they needed to replace the valve body. The receipt shows they DID NOT actually replace the VB but did replace the separator plates and a few assorted gaskets/seals. They also updated...
  2. Question on amount of oil

I changed mine today. 7qts of 15w40 Delvac heavy duty diesel oil. The extra .8 puts it very slightly overfilled. Just above the second hole in the dipstick. No crank strike or cassette foaming to be concerned about if overfilled by 0.8qts. ~59k miles. 15w40 and 5w40 diesel oil since new.
  3. Fuel in oil

We should start an oil and gas company. Ford Rangers are how we can produce oil and gas for wholesale distribution. They make so much extra, you couldn’t lose, right. One Ranger has gotta make at least, what, 10 barrels a day? “Things are gonna be different this time, I can feel it”
  4. Fuel in oil

Time for all you guys who legitimately lose sleep over “making oil” to just capitulate, and sell your Ranger for a Tacoma. Yeah, a Tacoma suits you better. I won’t judge you. Your loved ones might. This is an inclusive space.
  5. Tranny not programmed differently for Tremors?

AH, you must have a very consistent 10r80. Mine shifts well 95% of the time. To me, it’s excessive converter slip and PWM, but smooth during that 95%. When it does not, it’s hellacious. I agree firm shifts can be very nice and certainly used to save the trans in the old days. The poor...
  6. Tranny not programmed differently for Tremors?

When I put my BMW in “Default” mode, the ZF shifts like butter, is telepathic in its refinement, and returns phenomenal MPG. This is true for all ZF8 based vehicles I’ve owned and driven. The trans may be a great unit, but it’s a basket case in terms of shift quality.
  7. Transmission Woes

“Also I suspect you are confusing "objectively" with "subjectively".” No, I did intend to use the word “objectively”. Like other things that are objectively true, the 10r80 is trash compared to the ZF8. If Ranger buyers had a choice between a 10r80 or ZF8, all but the strychnine zealots would...
  8. Transmission Woes

I suspect 10r80 complete failures are very rare, maybe less than 1%. Erratic or occasional hard shifting has to be common, maybe as common as 100%. Most people are automatons, and don’t even comprehend it —not an issue for them. Objectively, the 10r80 is trash compared to the ZF8 based units...
  9. Ford Can't Locate My Oil Leak

I always add 7 quarts. Dipstick shows it overfilled very slightly. Next OTI the oil level has been right about the perfect fill mark. 57k miles and mine has never made oil. My favorite part of telling everyone I add 7 quarts on an OC, is knowing how much it makes peoples heads explode with...
  10. Tranny not programmed differently for Tremors?

FWIW, the AdTrac button is a neo-placebo, even when held down longer for stage 2-off. I do hoon and clown, and the nanny never goes off. Only tricks you for a brief moment or two, to fool you into thinking it’s actually your private property. This fact is all the evidence necessary to know...
  11. Tranny not programmed differently for Tremors?

SHO, there’s something to what your saying. I’ve put in in Sport mode but essentially lugged it manually just above 1000rpm, or just above a forced downshift during a couple 9 mile mixed speed loops. According the the computer, it gets worse MPGs at forced low RPM, then in D. It can’t make any...
  12. RAT Stat 170* thermostat

Let us know how the 170 setup works. I’m in the camp that it may not deliver what you hope, but I support your desire and your right to try it. Also, our engines have Mech fan clutches with some type of magnetic partical brake clutch system —or similar maybe? It will be interesting to see how...
  13. Tranny not programmed differently for Tremors?

I agree it should be better. My perception is that it lugs intentionally for MPG and PWMs the converter excessively. Ford must have tested many interactions of programming and found this is optimal for efficiency. It is a genuine irritant. I towed a car and trailer about 300 miles this morning...
  14. Oil level

Oddly enough, I have the opposite problem. Mine always shows slightly under-filled at 6.2 quarts. I usually just put 7 quartz in, and then it shows very slightly overfilled. Not overfilled enough to worry about crank-strike or foaming from the cassette. At the next OTI, it usually indicates...
  15. Oil Viscosity

Thanks old salt. I have the unique problem of having many vehicles and also having a daily commute of 125-135 miles each day. I get to put a lot of miles on many different forms of transportation. I've put 200k miles on several while using HDDO and have never had a cat problem, or a CEL...
  16. Oil Viscosity

Thanks Frenchy. You go ahead and keep using whatever oil you like, and I’ll keep using whatever oil I like. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be kind enough to give me a ride when my Ranger burst into flames as a result of the 15w40 HDDO I’m using. But on a serious note, you don’t think the...
  17. Oil Viscosity

I run heavy duty diesel oil, mostly Rotella T4 in all my engines. Always have. Never had a problem. My Ranger has Delvac 15w40 in it now, and has around 55k miles. Oil weights are not determined by tolerances or VCT systems, despite popular lure. If tolerances played a significant role in...
  18. Oil type?

Mostly Rotella 15w40 T4, some 5w40 T5 and T6, and has Delvac 15w40 in it now. All HD diesel oil. 55k miles and no issues. I run the same oils and weights in all my IC engine equipment, personal and work, ever since I was a baby. All routinely go 200k before I pass them on for a second life...
  19. Transmission Woes

My Ranger has ~55k. It’s always been clunky from new, particularly when cold. I drive it hard and tow beyond its rated capacity on occasion. I hold the accelerator to the floor through the first 4-6 gears very often, including when I’m towing. It’s a good durable unit so far, even if it’s...
  20. SSM 49264 - Climate Control Temperature Will Not Adjust With Clicking/Snapping Noise From The Dash

Maybe it is a bandaid. Time will tell. When manipulated by hand, my blend door mechanism was smooth and unobstructed in travel. If my post saves someone competent with their hands $4000, this forum will have done its job. About a month in and all is still working well. Even if it fails every...
