Dealers do that stuff to boost sales, they always have done this. When I bought my first Norton in 1969, the dealer had modified it. I had to request the stock parts back.

I have considered applying a film to my headlights and taillights, but only for defensive purposes. The taillights cost about $1K, headlights probably more, and the film is only a couple of bucks. I would not want to in any way reduce my visibility. Thoughts, anyone?

Your post definitely struck a chord with me, I am in a very similar place. But in particular, when my Ranger was delivered my first impression of the 'ride' was - and I said this to my wife - it reminded me of the ride of a late-'fifties Buick LeSabre.

I am pretty sure that there is a rev-limiter within the ignition module, designed to prevent this sort of accidental damage. I found out about this technology when I over-revved my then brand-new GL1800 Goldwing - with no damage.
