it was fine. did nothing to shake my confidence in this truck. it would have given us pause earlier in our offroad career, but now just seemed like good fun. might have knocked the skids a few times (as you mention, there is a stretch of very featured rock crawling at the pass) but no concerns...
"what we have here is a failure to communicate"
i keep saying "why does the truck think i need one gear in loose TMS mode, another gear in normal TMS mode, for the same terrain", and you keep saying "you need more torque"
but i dont in these situations i describe. the truck goes forward.
the...
nope. guess im a dummy.
if we're cruising along at 10mph the car is spinning 1.5k, and if i put on loose terrain TMS without a change in speed now its revving 2.5k, presumably keeping the car in a lower gear.
i dont understand why it does that.
well, i have no trouble moving forward in the ranger, despite the size of the step or the angle of the incline. still dont understand why TMS would run a lower gear/higher revs for loose terrain.
why the higher RPMs? clearly there is a reason but i dont know what it is.
i rarely use TMS, but recently going up some steep slippery gravel/sand in a wash i tried the gravel or sand mode. cant remember. i didnt appreciate any functional difference, but the engine was revving at least a...
starting up golen canyon, death valley national park. fun canyon wash driving with a stream running down most of the way
getting into the rock garden coming out of Golen canyon. some technical rock crawling gets you to Mengel pass. lots of wheel lifting on the swoops, and a couple spots that...
ive watched some of those videos. sort of like a catalog of "this is one way to get stuck" vignettes as a tutorial for us newbie offroaders.
anyways, matt does use a ball hitch at times.
but thats doesn't mean its a good idea. his equipment might be strong enough, but he also might have...
snow camping in tahoe
snow camping near hot springs on the california east side
the truck still works! its the first time i found an objective advantage to living out of a two-room (cab/bed) mobile home. when its below freezing at night, all the frost and icicles are in the bed, and i dont...
tell us more..
because the 5 will deform instead of fail catastrophically? is it magic?
for my application (bolt instead of hitch pin for poor-man's rear tow point) would it make a difference to go to the 5 instead of my 8? or are both overbuilt for this application?
oh interesting. our truck says 38 is recc for stock. im assuming we have different stock wheels, but even then didnt realize there would be such a difference.
his comment is not referring to uncertainty about why the tire pressure changes. he is referring to uncertainty about how the tpms can access that data.
32? thats not super low?
This post has a good photo of the vents from inside.

The flaps are super light. With the seats off, turning the air on even at the lowest levels would typically blow them all wide open...
Yes. Very lightweight soft thin rubber flaps. Nothing that would keep a mouse out and the holes are large enough I would suspect a small rat would have no problem.
Nice. Like others I wonder if a finer screen would be more likely to keep the field mice out out of the cab.
Similar screen might benefit the cab vents. Those would admit a mouse easily. Removing the seats only takes a few minutes to install..
The Kitchen:
The kitchen is your basic setup, tossed in the back of a pickup.
the single biggest immediate upgrade to the function of the ranger as a camping accessory for us was putting a sheet of wood on the tailgate. this was mentioned in this thread here...
myth 1: 8" butthole stretch = no damage.
im no ford engineer, but as a career human engineer i can call BS on this one.
myth 2: the ford cab is impenetrable.
im no ford engineer, but i had a mouse get into our cab and glove box (independently) a month back. in my experience mice have no trouble...
I went through about six tanks of gas with stock hancook 265/65/17 using 65mph as cruise control, followed by around six tanks of gas with duratrac 255/75/17 (32.1") also using 65mph cruise control. mostly highway. for whatever reason i have never hit the advertised mpg with this truck ever...
