Yeah, mine is a daily driver. I commute 50 miles one way to my office. But I do things in my off time too, I may take my motorcycle to the track on a trailer a few times a year, I may haul some mulch for my wife to do yard work with a few times a year, I may go up in the mountains camping once...
My 12 year old manages fine too, and letting the tailgate down by itself without a damper isn't really going to hurt it. But I like the fact that in the cases where it happens it could save on wear and tear, and it's a quality of life thing.
