Bought these at Costco today, $25. (It was a two pack, but I already gave one to my dad to keep in his f-150)
They are light weight aluminum, so probably wouldn't work for serious overlanding folks, but for my purposes (hopefully avoiding getting stuck in snow this winter) they should work...
Good point. The only real use case for me is when I'm running tons of quick errands in and out of the truck. More than 75% of the time, I'm doing a longer drive where I want to be charging anyway.

I downloaded the android 11 update (with included android auto update) to my pixel 3 yesterday, so in theory, I should have wireless AA on any head unit that is capable. Based on the info here: https://support.google.com/androidauto/answer/6348029?hl=en

I'm too nervous to take my ranger off-road (for now- I just bought it!) but I want to get a similar setup for my dad for his kawsaki UTV in the UP of Michigan.

That sounds very frustrating. I've had a great experience with android auto in the truck - much better than trying to use it in my wife's subaru. Have you tried using a different cable?
