lucky idot... pulling a weapon and threatening use of bombs on military ship and us special officers could easily have satisfied me to "light em up" with no remorse or worry. seems like stupid folks have good luck sometimes.

Extremely lucky idiot.

You’ll notice that this is his 4th “Hamster Wheel” adventure.

Still shocked he made it 70 miles offshore.

When I first read this my first through was what the hell were the coast guard ordering him in the international waters or at high seas.

Then I did some more research on the topic and due to..
1. International waters (high seas) do not belong to any state's jurisdiction
2. Exclusive economic zone (200 miles) does not grant the jurisdiction to surface
3. ships sailing the high seas are generally under the jurisdiction of the flag state
4. the operators nationality in this case determines the flag state as by the vessel was under the clause "vessel belonging in whole or in part to the United States, or any citizen thereof".

He would have still needed another 3420 miles to hit UK territorial waters or be of different nationality to avoid the charges. For other nationalities the charges could have been illegal exit but only in case the operator had a court warrant against him.

So the Finnish guy who is currently rowing his boat back from Florida is ok (He already did row to there). Phew.

He didn't pay registration fees, insurance and taxes on his hamster wheel.
They probably would've used a Harpoon missile on him if he did that ?

hamster boy made me think back.. as a kid i did a card board boat race. rules said no screws nail or woods no flotation devices keeping the boat floating no engines had to hold one passenger. so the race part was sort of the cherry for sundae of getting across the line and back to shore before the boats gave up. almost no one does. it was basically about the damn adults getting to laugh at the kids for sinking and trying to dog paddle a refrigerator box. i didnt make it first but i was the only one with a boat on the surface.
i was accused of cheating... i told them the rules didnt say Sh%$ about using 18 rolls of duct tape to water proof the cardboard . i did the tape like a lap strake hull over lapping about 40% each time. yes, the entire boat.
the other kids looked so jealous. boat lasted about 4 hours until water got the better of the tape.
if flex tape would have been around back then the SS Sticky would still be floating.
