Disabling the apps in the sync3 settings screen as described by @ToddlerCO above fixed the issue for me. CarPlay works perfectly with no battery drain issues since I did that.
Maybe I spoke too soon. While these updated versions seem better, I had the problem again this afternoon.

The problem is a bug in iOS 14 in the code that handles external accessories. When a supported external accessory is connected iOS recognises it and tries to launch the matching app.
