    I pull a homemade tear drop that weighs in at 1200 lbs. You cannot even tell its back there other than the MPG drops from 24 to 20 at highway speeds.

    You might try McMaster Carr https://www.mcmaster.com/products/gas-struts/. Its my experience that $40 is a fair price. In general, gas struts are not inexpensive.

    I get 20 - 22mpg pulling a 1200 lb Teardrop @ 60-65 mph. My bet is if you drop your speed your mph would increase significantly.
