Airing down your tires to 22-25 psi will help you float over the sand a lot better also. Just have an air pump with you to air back up before the highway.
The driveshaft in a RWD or 4WD vehicle is sometimes (wrongly, IMO) called a propeller shaft because they (wrongly) use the term driveshafts to describe the halfshafts.
That’s pretty standard for automatic transmissions. Typically, you can use positions past “D” to lock out the higher gears when you want more engine braking, such as going down steep hills. You typically don’t need to press the lever to shift out of these gears.
