Ford will sell you the missing wires as it turns out. The part listed in the dealer bulletin for the early 2019 trucks that were missing the wiring even with the tow package is available for $54 and looks like it will let you install the blue /yellow wires to under the drives dash. It does...
Wise words and completely agree. I was only pointing out that for every other possible combination of trim level and tow package except a non tow XL, a trip to your dealer and some $$ can get you to the 7500 lb max with Ford OEM parts. My research prior to purchase did not uncover that fact...
Ford limits towing of non braked trailers to 1650 lbs in the owners manual so to get to the max 3500 lbs for a non tow package XL you either need a trailer with surge brakes or an aftermarket TBC. There is no way to get to 3500 lbs from Ford.
This sums up the mess that Ford have created with regards to towing with the Ranger. The non hitch bumper is actually rated up to 3500 lbs - but only with a trailer brake controller. It seems, if you have an XL without the tow package, there is no way for Ford to install the Ford trailer brake...
100% agree - if I were to buy an XL again I would not without the factory tow package. I purchased my Ranger used and thought how hard can it be, its just a bolt on hitch, plug in wiring, and everyone has to install the TBC, tow package or not. The one thing that proved me wrong was the lack...
Totally agree and the aftermarket options certainly look like easier installs.. However, I am trying to keep integration with the emergency braking system on the truck by using Ford parts.
Thanks - I cannot believe Ford did this either - especially as some of the wiring is there - specifically the 7 wires running forward from the connector close to the bumper that either the 4 pin or 7 pin wiring plugs into.
I was also unaware that any trucks other than early 2019 models were...
1500 lbs with original bumper and no trailer brakes (approx - don't have manual in front of me - plus varies by State laws), 3500 lbs with original bumper and trailer brakes, and 7500 lbs with tow package (hitch and 7 pin that I have installed) and trailer brakes. All Rangers are the same.
Thanks for the info. I was trying to use Ford parts to ensure compatibility with the emergency braking system.
The dealer is looking into part KB3Z-15A416-C - meant to be the wiring kit for trucks built without the wires under the dash for the TBC. My truck has the correct wiring running...
I had only seen reference to the 2019s missing the wiring - something Ford addressed here https://www.ranger5g.com/forum/attachments/dealer-letter-20b55v2-pdf.69461/
Seems I can confirm it is also missing in at least one 2020 XL but I am not eligible for the fix from Ford based on my built date.
I thought I had seen a post from someone with a 2020 XL saying the wiring was there but maybe that was just wishful thinking - there are multiple posts from XLT / Lariat owners saying their trucks do have it.
Wondering if I can add part KB3Z-15A416-C which is the trailer tow wiring kit that...
Thanks for the reply - I edited my original post for clarity as I was a little frustrated when I first posted. These are all Ford OEM parts.
The dealer also told me that my truck was missing the "other coolers" that come with the tow package - given you said what I already knew about the tow...
I have already added the Factory hitch and the Ford TBC - just couldn't find the blue and yellow wires up under the dash to complete the install so I went to the dealer.
I think the 1000 lbs is because the dealer says there is no way to add the Ford Redarc brake controller to my truck, there for restricting me to the lower un-braked trailer limit.
