Not sure about the tri-folds for the Ranger, but all the Bakflip style tri-folds I've seen have a rubber gasket like piece run across this surface to prevent the aluminum from contacting the trucks paint/window when fully open. Definitely worth adding for some peace of mind! Hope it helps...
