Hi All

Putting together a toolkit for overlanding in my 2020 FX4. Do I need metric or SAE wrenches?

Thanks

Mark

You'll need metric.

ETA: Come to think of it you will be better served with having both on hand. The truck will be mostly metric but aftermarket accessories could be SAE. I keep both in my off-road tool box.

I have sets of both SAE and metric.
I find that the Ranger use mostly metric.

I would recommend getting multiple sets if you‘re likely to be wrenching / DIY install often.
There are times you would need 2 of the same size.
( like when holding a bolt to tighten a nut)

I wish you could get a Crown Royal bag of just 10MM Sockets.

Get the ratcheting style for most work. I'd keep the largest size also in plain box end style just incase you need the torque. Phil (as always @P. A. Schilke ) has good advice to use.

I ended up buying Kobalt. Was gonna buy Gerwrench, but their quality seems to have taken a dive. I hHave a metric set of Astro Tools Low Profile Naon Impact Socets (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JBK1FHG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which are AWESOME. you can use with normal driver or flex-head wrench. The wrench to go with them is pricey (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JBOE78G/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1) super useful though: used it last week. Just bought their SAE's

Hi R Peterson,

9/16 is 14.3mm and I believe it too loose on a 14mm hex head bolt as is a 5/8 too tight for 16mm and way too loose for a 15. JMO.

Years ago the USA decided to go metric but they didnt know the extent of what that would be like. Tool companies made out like bandits as mechanics now have to have twice the tools and double the tool boxes to hold them. And still the conversion is far from being complele. ?

For instance tires:
Diameter in inches, tread width in millimeters and sidewall expressed as a ratio of the two.
