Why order an FX4 package after reading this forum?

I honestly didn’t need the FX4 just 4x4 in case I got in a bad spot hunting or a slick boat ramp. Dealer said with the rebates he had on the FX4 I bought vs the non FX4 was going to be $200 and the FX4 came with the towing package. I will probably never use the terrain management or need the locker being I live on the coast of SC buts it cool to have!

No use arguing, we're both stubborn, and I'm frugal - so I usually go the harder route, pound the pavement, buy take offs, etc.. so I'll leave it here, for me - the tremor is a rip off.

But then again, so was my whole ranger. Endless issues and a manufacturer who doesnt care. Mine is long gone now, but I do still hit this forum every week or so because I like the group of people here, but that's all beside the point.

Guessing you replaced the Ranger with a Taco since DFresh wished you well with it. Since you prefer to do your own upgrades, just curious as to what engine and transmission you installed in the Taco after ripping out the under performing factory items?

I did not seek out a fx4 but did want 4x4 with a locker having needing it in my Frontier that had open diffs.

I got lucky that they had a
lariat fx4, max loaded that had been on the lot for 4 months and got it well under msrp.

I have 2k plus upgrades in tires and suspension. I mostly daily drive it but do take trails in NC. Mostly moderate offroading but the fx4 package works very well for me and I am glad I have it ( minus the obnoxious sticker?)

Oh and if the Tremor had been available in 2019 I would seriously shopped it.

I set myself a cap and with what I was putting down I didn’t want payments higher than the low 200s per month. If I didn’t have daycare payments of 800 a month since me and my wife both work then I would have probably would have gone a tremor. Shoot I may have ended I’m up with another full sized truck but also drive an hour to work so the ranger is perfect. Told the dealer I had to have 4x4, locking rear diff, cruise control and CarPlay (listen to a lot of podcasts, music, and use the maps a lot). Gentleman just sold back a 22 STX XL 4x4 w/ locker and which had the 8 inch touchscreen and cruise control. Has everything I really need, but I’m making some changes to the suspension(Bilsteins in 4 corners and global leaf springs) and will eventually go to the stock tremor tire size. Your truck sound nice though. I would have gotten a 4x4 lariat they had but didn’t want to spend more than what I set for myself and since we moved about 6 months ago, I bought the truck at probably the worst possible time but I also had to have one for work. Sold my 20 plus year old Silverado before we hit the road to move. I don’t see very many Rangers here at the dealership where I am at so I had to hop on the one I got ASAP. I think you really can’t go wrong with any of these and since the engine and transmission are all the same in these, the changes are a bit more subtle and technology based. I wouldn’t mind the trail control but I’ve always driven rwd trucks so this is a major upgrade even without it. Now I won’t be in fear of getting stuck while out fishing and shooting in the mountains. I would mind doing a little bit heavier (for me) off-roading at some point though.

Yeah this will be the last year, my youngest will be in kindergarten next year. When both my sons were in childcare we were paying over 1600 a month (more than my mortgage at the time). I definitely plan on trying to really enjoy the time they are growing up. It goes so damn fast, you’re right. My older kid is 8 and every time I look at him it’s like where the heck did time go. I think it’s easy to let life get in the way of what matters. I missed a lot of the first few years of his life when I was in the military. When I got out of the service I worked nights and weekends and that was hard. I never got as much time with my kids as I wanted because my schedule was always the opposite of theirs and my wife’s. I’ve got it made now working a normal daytime job, so I’ve been doing my best at getting time with my kids. We go fishing a lot and there are times where I’ll put my kid (s) in the truck and just drive around and talk with them. My wife hated the fact I was working graveyard shift and I told her it was just a means to an end. Life is much better now.

Damn shame you got a built on Friday just after liquid lunch truck.

Mine has been solid for the admittedly low miles ( 24k ) I have on it.

Yeah, a bummer for sure. Absolutely loved that truck. HVAC Blend door issues, constantly having battery drain issues, and mysterious missing coolant. The tacoma is OK, all of the gripes might be slightly overhyped, but the ranger was still a more fun vehicle to drive. My big concern is: I need reliability above all else. I drive long distances through CO, WY & MT at night several times a year, and I cant be having breakdowns or mechanical issues on those trips, ever.

Oh boy - I had that one coming. Honestly the transmission was re-mapped for 2020, and mines a '21. Its still a bit lost at times, but they've tamed down the gear hunting quite a bit. It does make its power in the high RPM, but its not a terrible combo. The setup in the ranger was much more pleasant to drive, but I will say the piece of mind on things like HVAC & electrical not breaking, as well as engines with no head gasket histories, I'm happy in the Tacoma. One other thing, I was able to get the exact cab configuration that I wanted this time around. Crew cab & long bed.

I'll miss the ranger. It was a hoot and a half to drive, and slamming my foot to the floor always made me smile, but I am real happy to be rid of the reliability issues I was experiencing.

A basic Colorado as in one with a NA 4-banger ? If that I'd say the poor sot deserves some sympathy. But then again maybe he off roads with that journalist who has made his mark here and has earned the recognition that comes with that badge and has no reservations about displaying it to the rest of us rugged wannabees.
