When Do You Fill Up?

This is something I want to do that may be applicable to this thread - recalibrate your MPG estimate.

From @RCMUSTANG:

Take your manual calculated mpg and divide by the computer calculation. Example 21 mpg manual cal divided by computer cal 22.3 = 0.9417. You can round up to 0.942. Multiply by 1000 gives you 942. Plug that number into step #7.

#1 Hold the left steering wheel center ok button down.
#2 turn accessory power on (do not start).
#3 you'll see ET appear (top of left screen, don't have standard gauges so I don't know how or where that will appear).
#4 hit ok.
#5 Engineering screen will appear.
#6 hit arrow up to the AFE screen and follow screen to adjust.
#7 once set to desired numbers turn off ignition.
It may take 1 or 2 tanks to fully adjust to the change. That should get you closer to real mileage.

I haven't read through this whole thread, but I'll reply to the opening post.

I never fill up when my gauge is above 1/2. I usually fill up when it's below 1/4, or the fuel light comes on. I hate stopping for gas, so I try and do it as few times as possible.

This thread would probably benefit from having a poll added to it.

I tend to run the fuel relatively low on my other vehicles, but since my Ranger is mostly used for weekly ski days in the winter and towing our camper the rest of the time, I fill it up a day or two after returning so that it's always ready for the next adventure.

I know this has been brought up in other mpg threads but I don't think we've ever had one dedicated to this. I usually fill up when a 1/4 tank is left but with gas being so high now I've been filling up right around the 1/2 way mark. It's just a little less painful even though you're spending the same amount in the end. I had an ex who'd run it down to fumes!

So are you conservative and fill up early or adventurous and live on the edge??

In the spring/summer/early fall - I fill up above 1/4 of a tank
In the late fall/winter - I fill up at half

My ranger is garage kept (heated) so I keep it full versus of running into an issue with condensation.

I tend to fill it up when it lights up basically somewhere under the 50 miles backup meaning when the lights up then I have 50 more miles...IS THIS BAD or is there a difference if I do it at a quarter tank left??? of a tank and I always put premium also Buy My House Dino Sinclair premium at night I get it for $3.79-$4.09

no way really I thought fuel pumps burn out when your completely out of gas stranded while trying to start it.. you know these truck when the run outta gas you can only try to start it one time then you gotta wait like a minute or two after cranking it...so you don't burn the fuel pump

How many miles do you get on a fuel tank ????
I get 325-370

The burn out comes from overheating the pump. The pump is cooled by being submerged in fuel. If you run really low on fuel, the pump isn't submerged and it overheats.

You want to keep some fuel around the pump as it helps to keep it cool. I have, in the past, had to replace pumps that drivers ran them low all the time.

In the winter I usually fill up around half a tank if it is cold out. Otherwise, I shoot for around quarter tank most of the year unless I anticipate driving a further distance soon.
