Operative word is "over time." The vacuum hub connect is "engaged" when vacuum is reduced or missing. There is forewarning as the affected gear begins to ratchet which can be heard inside the cab.
But overall you are correct as leaks can be very difficult to fid and fix. A smoke generator can help a lot but not everyone has access to one.

I'm wondering if there may be a benefit to changing it earlier though. Let's say, what if I have a heavy right foot in stop light to stop light traffic? LOL
I changed my trans fluid at 36k and it feels way better with gear shifts, no random clunks so far. I am like you in driving style.
