What did I do wrong?

I was showing a friend my new Tremor the other day. I had my keys on the center console {I know that was my 1st mistake}. I had the front passenger door open and was showing him the Ford app. I then started the truck from the app. We talked for a few minutes and I reached into the truck and shut it off using the button on the dashboard. I then shut the passenger door and heard the "click". The doors had locked. Since I had my phone I was able to easily unlock the vehicle {luckily I didnt toss my phone down on the seat!}, but still trying to figure out what happened so I can avoid it in the future. One thing I did check was if the intelligent access would work with the key inside of the vehicle - it didnt, which makes perfect sense!

Starting the truck remotely will lock the doors. Your passenger door, while open, was still locked. When you closed it, you were locked out (well you had your phone so not really locked out).

I know several other auto makers have a feature that prevents the doors from locking, including the trunk if the key fob is in the vehicle or trunk. I have this safety feature on a 2014 Honda...FYI

The remote start locks the doors, which was said above. I'm surprised that it locked with the key in the truck, but I wonder if the remote start overrode that setting to prevent theft.

While this does allow me to unlock or start my car with my phone, it more importantly allows me to do so also with my watch. While I have left my phone in the truck more times than I can count, it seems unlikely I will ever leave my watch locked in my truck.

Maybe try to duplicate it (but with a window down perhaps) just for extra peace of mind.

Tried to replicate this issue with my 2020 lariat just now and couldn’t even lock my key fob in it. Weird.

Love mine. Just remember the battery last 7 years or so then the whole thing will need replaced.
