my version 2 camp tent trailer. Main additions is I painted all the raw steel including the diamond plate, and added a 20 gallon fresh water setup with 2 10 gallon RV water tanks made to function as one, RV water pump, and acculator for nice water pressure

That is more "stuff" than we carry in our 28 foot travel trailer AND in the back of the Expedition, for a 2 week trip.
And it probably takes me 1/2 the time to set up at a campground spot !!!!!

Although the over landing setups are compact and allow deeper exploration I can have our travel trailer set up pretty quick. From there it makes a great home base to go from. I guess it depends on the goal. Getting way off road first then staying the overlanding makes sense. Our travel trailer is an '88 and not the off road type. Some of the newer high ground clearance models would allow similar access.

the problem with trailer trailers is the quality of units these days and costs. It may look like a lot of stuff but setup is about an hour to hour and a half. Plus this allows us flexibility for camping in more remote places.

I have curt designed coil spring independent suspension on my NOBO 19.5 and 13" of ground clearance so I can drag the trailer on some jacked up roads, the problem is getting to those places, if I drive over 60 gas consumption is robust, took mostly back roads on a recent trip to Moab and going 45 mph yielded 18 mpg. I visited a friend with one of those cone head trailers parked in his backyard but didn't go inside of it, I'd like to see how much standing room at the triangle tip there is for a 6' , I'd be afraid of waking up in the night and getting my head wedged in the triangle. Anyways he bought it hoping his wife would go camping and she wouldn't so he's used it 0 times, makes for a good conversation piece parked in his backyard.

I agree your set up allows more off road capability, and agree that the quality of many rv's is lacking.
But, careful "looking" at units, and knowing what your looking for/at and your/my ability is a consideration. I am well versed in rv's, their construction, maintaince and what I am capable of fixing/repairing/modifying. We don't go off road and generally stick with the better rv parks.
It only takes me, from pulling into the spot, about 1/2 hour to get fully set up with hookups and another 15 minutes to get the awning out, chairs out, and a cold beer from the fridge.
Not down-playing your set up at all....we all have different needs, abilities and after camping for over 50 years, would never critisize someone else's rig or what they bring along.
Many happy trips waiting for you.........:like:

1st RV I've ever owned so don't have a comparison point, but I like it and in reading posts from owners who previously had beam suspension RVs - it makes a big difference in reducing the amount of energy transmitted from bumps and uneven road surfaces into the RV, plus it enhances handling on the highway, around curves and so on. The NOBO is a 2024, might be the 1st year Forest River offered it and they were touting as a game changer for the RV industry but don't know how widely it's propagated , it adds weight and cost.

I'm with you Steve, in my younger days, I've done the swag thing, the tent thing, the rooftop tent thing, the fold out camper thing, the wind up camper thing, the off road caravan thing, and now that I'm getting old and cranky, the comfy caravan thing, that like you, can pull up, and be set up, and drinking a cold beer in about 20-30 minutes. In fact will be doing it this Easter with the new caravan (travel trailer for you guys) that we took out for a few days shakedown a month ago.

Our set up isn't fancy and even vintage 😂 but it's comfortable and I can take it to elk camp and such. That's good enough. With the truck I can then explore further or take the mountain bikes and at elk camp I can make a separate trip to take the ATV. From my house to camp isn't that far. Advantage of living in north Idaho! 😁 This is our camping spot up the freestone river we camp and I fly fishing on.

What size fish in the river ? 10 yrs back went on a 4 day backpack trip in the white cloud wilderness, fished some decent size lakes but the fish were on the small side. Forgot what the main highway was but was impressed by the numerous camping areas . IIRC it was the inagural year for that Wilderness and it was only on the last day that we saw people.

The creek we camp on has smaller fish up to 6-7" but a few years ago I ended up catching a 16" and then an 18" West Slope Cutthroat where two small feeders come together. The main river has turned up 20" cutts several times. I have heard people say they caught up to 24" fish but I haven't seen any.

I had to look up that fish variety, didn't realise it was a species of trout. We don't have any native trout in Australia, introduced North American Rainbow, and European brown trout, and brook trout, can be caught in the southern parts of south eastern states, but it's too hot for them where I live. This weekend I'll be looking for Golden perch, and Australian bass and maybe the odd looking Saratoga when we take off to spend a few days at the dam we like to camp at. I'll also be setting some pots for Redclaw, a large native freshwater crayfish that can grow up to a foot long.

Cutthroat are native to the Rocky Mountains. The West slope cutts are our state fish and wild reproducing populations are protected here. They used to stock some rainbows but they crossed with the cutts creating a cuttbow hybrid. Great fish but then you don't have pure native cutts. The cuttbows are gone as far as I can tell. There are also native mountain whitefish in the drainages. They're cousins to arctic greyling. Here's a few pics of the cutts. The first one is my buddies catch the rest are mine.

yeah lots of subspecies of cutthroats, they were at one time stocked in alpine lakes in CO, some self reproducing lakes still have some lunkers, now what they called "native" - the greenback cutt is mostly stocked and it's the state fish of Colorado, but they seem to be on the smaller side. Some 40 yrs back before I gained more experience I tried fishing Yellowstone lake for the yellowstone cutts, big lunkers but caught 0 , I'd like to get back there to settle an old score. Cutts can be picky but working midges, nymphs and other stuff that hatch from the lake bottom can yield some great catches. Have hiked to some alpine lakes and came upon some hatches literally covering much of the surface and cleaned up. Those cutts in the picture have smaller black spots than many cutthroat subspecies, nice catches !
