Does anyone have experience with the Thule Revert or Velocirax bike rack on this truck?

I just found a bed cap this past winter which means I now need a a bike rack. I'm looking at the two models specified above. I really like the features of the Velocirax and I'm leaning in that direction BUT my local bike shop sells Thule and the owner is a really nice guy, so it's nice to support him when possible.

Here's where I get stuck, I've read a couple of account of people using the Revert and having issues with the tailgate hitting the pivot when the tailgate opens, which means that you can't put any weight on the tailgate when it's open without risking paint damage which just won't work for someone of my height because being able to climb in and out of the bed is a must.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks in advance

I don’t have any personal experience with either rack. I run the Quickr stuff tray rack and I love it. But my buddy runs the Velocirax on his minivan and loves it. He’s a coach for the mountain bike team at a local charter school and he loves how many bikes he can carry. He also loves that he can still open the rear hatch of his minivan even when the rack is fully loaded. He says it feels solid and he’s never had any problems with bikes hitting each other or with bikes getting loose. I asked him all about it before I got my rack. I went with a tray rack because we have e-bikes, analogue bikes, and bikes of all different sizes, so the tray rack seemed easier to load heavy bikes on and my 8 year old can load his own bike. Second hand, but I hope it helps.

What about a 1up hitch rack? I see loads of them out in the Desert Southwest, and a couple friends own and swear by them after previously utilizing competitors. They seem really popular amongst the off-roader crowd out here.

1up USA

While I have no experience with either rack you linked, my only anecdote is Thule makes some nice looking and high-quality equipment. My bed rack from them is of excellent quality.

I'm not familiar with that one. I'll take a look, thanks!

Following this, because I've got to eventually get a bike rack that will work with the truck. Had a Saris Bones 3 for my old SUV, but obviously that doesn't work for the truck, so handed that off to my sister. Since then, I've just been putting them in the bed for short little day trips or less, but need a solution for the longer trips.

On your point about the tailgate hitting the pivot point, 1) will that also be a problem with the Velocirax? 2) As redneck as it sounds, could that problem be resolved by wrapping some foam tubing (like a pool noodle, etc.) around it?

What does the bike shop owner say? I'm assuming that if you know him well enough, you're probably a steady customer, and if he's as nice as you say he'll probably give you an honest answer for the sake of the long-term relationship vs. trying to sell you whatever because you're just another client who may or may not ever walk in again.

I had the older 1up hitch rack. It’s a tray rack and it’s awesome. I needed to upgrade because I got an e-bike that weighs more than the old rack’s weight rating. I got the QuikrStuff rack which is the updated design of the 1up rack. QuikrStuff is the new company by the same designer of the 1up rack. The QuikrStuff rack is basically the same rack as the 1up rack but it’s tool free.
It’s an awesome rack, but it’s a tray rack, not a vertical rack. 2 totally different use cases. The tray racks are really only useful for 2 bikes, maybe 3, but once you go to 4 bikes the weight limit of each bike drops to ridiculously low levels due to the longer lever arm and the amount or torque it applies to your receiver hitch. The vertical racks are harder to load but can carry a lot more bikes.

I thought about the pool noodle method as well but the issue is that I'm short haha so it's more that I need to be able to climb onto the tailgate to get into the bed to grab stuff. Now that I've done more reading on the issue I found this product that may be the solution and it'll be more about features as either one should work.

My local guy would definitely be happy to help me as much as possible. The issue is he's a very small shop and doesn't carry a big inventory. He's a nice enough guy that he'd be happy to bring it in without me committing to buy it BUT I would feel guilty as that could mean it'll sit in his shop for a long time as an expense he had to bear on my behalf and I'm trying to avoid that if I can.
