Hello fellow Ranger Drivers. After 63k miles it's come time to replace my tires. I have an FX4 that I go off road frequently, mostly mud, sand and some mild rocks. I also occasionally tow a 4500 lb. TT, sometimes long trips. I'm thinking of the BFG KO3 or the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek 265/70/17 (stock suspension, no lift or level). I know the KO3s are E rated, weighing 56lbs. and the Coopers are available in XL, weighing 45lbs. Anyone currently wearing either of these? If so, how did it affect your mpg, and the ride?

I have the KO3's in a 275/70r17, also E rated. They've been great for me, very quiet and well mannered on and off road. I've seen a pretty substantial mpg hit going to them from a 265/70r17 standard load duratrac, but most of my driving since getting them has been around town so i'm hanging around the 17-18 mpg mark. On the occasional highway cruise that isn't all hills, i've seen north of 20 mpg, so take that how you will. Overall i've been very pleased with them.

Totally understand the fair reason for going with that size. As a suggestion I would highly recommend looking at the Firestone Destination XT. It is available in 265/70-17. It is also a Load E, but it is also much lighter(45 lbs vs 55 lbs) and cost less. Also unlike some tires out there, it is made in Canada. I myself have no problems with tires from USA, Canada and Japan. From other places(like China and nearby) I suspect problems.

I have been running the Rugged Treks in 265/70/17 for a few years now.

I'd buy them again tomorrow.

Great traction off road and great manners on road

I will probably will be replacing them next year with the 285/70/17 version.

Then again, these may yet go another year.

Either way, it will again be the Rugged Treks.

I've had my Toyo AT3's for a few years now and really like them. They didn't hit MPG too much and have been great in snow and rain.

same. installed right after taking possession of my truck. 15k and wearing well. mpg sucks but i do have the front raised a bit and air dam removed, so theres that. like the tires, though

So this is what I'm running in the KO2 series. A load C and it works for me because I don't haul a lot of heavy things or tow.

I'm considering them only because people say they last a long time. I rarely haul anything heavy either. Just that they cost a lot up front, over $300. So far I've had the OE Bridgestones, Cooper AT3's, and now Mastercraft AT's. Our roads here are crap and I never get more than 35k out of any tire. Will need to replace the Mastercrafts before winter, OTOH they only cost $180 each.
Also considering Firestone Destination LE3's, more of an all-season tire but I should be okay in the snow with 4wd. Treadwear index on those is like 700 though.
I always get AT's because of snow but lately our winters haven't been real bad.

Michelin Defenders. Great. Highest rated tires. Long lasting.

I watched a few video reviews and have been eying the KO3s for my next set of tires. They have some legit looking design improvements.

I have gone through two pairs of Grabber ATX in 265/70r17 and they have been awesome. I think they are better/cheaper than KO2s but I don't think they are as good as the new KO3s.

I’m running the Rugged Treks in the E rated LT version. I have roughly 40k miles on them. They have been great. They aren’t loud and they don’t ride rough. I will say my experience has been they are air pressure sensitive and running higher than normal pressure is a big contributor to how they ride and drive. I am running between 45-47psi cold. But these are also E rated tires. I have towed my boat a few thousand miles with them and they performed great. 2 trips alone were over 1,000 miles each. Off road the performance in mud and sand has been great. I’m in the Low Country of SC so I have no experience with rocks. My MPG dropped 1-1.5mpg I think. I honestly can’t remember. I may have posted it somewhere on the forum after they were installed. But, I’m also running a heavier tire and I went up in size.
