Has anyone added tailgate storage? Is it crash-safe, or is the tailgate not part of crash safety?

For example, this link shows cutting away a crossmember, but I don't know if that's critical or structural for overall bed integrity.

The dimpled shapes in the tailgate panel that they removed, along with the crossmember that they removed are both critical to overall tailgate integrity.

I can't imagine what a person could be storing, that they couldn't easily store elsewhere, that would be worth all that effort?

Thanks. But, is that integral for crash safety and overall truck integrity?
Asked another way, would trucks have different crash ratings with the tailgate removed? (They are made removable, after all)

Most crash tests are frontal and side. The frame is going to be the biggest factor in a rear crash test. A really strong tailgate and bed means they will be pile driven into the cab during a crash, that's a bad thing.

From a crash test basis... I personally wouldn't worry at all about tailgate modifications...

Hi JB,

There is a rear impact test requirement but it is for fuel system integrity, not occupant related.
Phase‐in of the higher‐severity FMVSS rear crash test occurred from MY 2007 to MY 2009. The upgraded FMVSS No. 301 rear crash test requires striking the rear of the subject vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) with a 1,368 kg (3,015 lbs.) moving deformable barrier at a 70% overlap with the subject vehicle. For trucks, the tailgate is installed and is latched.

The insurance institute is pushing for testing for occupant protection. No FMVSS standard as of yet that I know.

Looks to me that the new box provides a good bit of structural integrity to the tailgate

I love the idea of that product. I have a Swingcase but it's a pain in the ass to access most of the time I'm using it.

Pretty nice but wonder how well sealed the thing is. Price wise seems a little on the high side.

Like the concept but for the space you get it looks like way to much work. Now if the OEM put them in at the factory that would be cool.
