Do headlight bulbs dim in time before they fail ?? My 2019 is 5 years old and I need as much illumination as possible driving at night in old age, so replacement before they fail might be the thing to do. Are the more expensive grades of Sylvania SilverStar’s any good or is it just a marketing thing ??

Yes, the brightness tends to decrease as the bulbs age (halogen). I put SYLVANIA - 9007 SilverStar - High Performance Halogen Headlight Bulbs in my 2003 Windstar and they were definitely brighter than the OEM style bulbs.

keep in mind, the brighter the bulb, the hotter they burn, and the hotter they burn, the shorter they last.

and, of course, never touch the glass part of the new bulb with your fingers. the oils in your skin create hot spots, which cause the bulb to burn out faster.

This. I always lick each bulb prior to installation for this reason.

After trying a few different LED bulbs I am back to the Sylvania now. They don't seem any brighter than OEM to me. The Osram look like they might be an improvement over stock so might see if Black Friday deals pop up.

All the LEDs I have tried end up with a flicker.

I replace my annually. They dim a lot. Thats why all the fancy bulbs seem so much brighter. Compared to a fresh oem they are only a little brighter.

Hard to find but I enjoyed the Phillips Nighthawk bulbs in previous vehicles. They typical have a blue tint thats about 5mm thick so it gives a little whiter light but lasts almost as long as OEM bulbs.

Could never find them in 9006 so I went with LED for the highs(and highs only)

On lumen output basis they may be 20% brighter. Then you factor in the human eye and that 20% might drop to apparent zero as the eye may opt to smaller pupil diameter instead of brighter picture. This actually gives you a longer focus range so it might not be bad even if the apparent brightness is the same.

With a camera and fixed shutter speed, ISO and focal lenght you can actually see the difference, with eye maybe not. Depends heavily on your eye ball mark 1 software version.

When I used to have halogen headlamps I used to use Vosla bulbs. They are high-end Phillips basically. I found them to truly be brighter, though their lifespan is a bit shorter since the burn hotter.
