What is the function of the row of red LEDs at the base of the windshield on the dash in front of the instrument cluster?
They seem to light up then fade when starting the truck, but not always.??

They go on when the collision mitigation comes on just before and when the system is braking.

So do you know what triggers them when the vehicle is sitting still? Do you suppose it is proximity to another vehicle or a garage door , or maybe it is just some start up response?

Just about all dash lights go on at start up.

start up led light test
my 2015 explorer had those and so does my dad's 2015 F-150.
They go off when the collision alert is activated.

What trim do you have as I don't have them on my Lariat?

That's true, but instrument symbols are consistent, I guess it is triggered somehow.
Does yours flash on every startup?

STX
It is a clear panel about 6"X 1" with about a dozen red LEDs.
It is located on the front edge of the dash at the windshield about where you might see a defroster vent.
I think it is as you say and a start up test, I probably just didn't notice at first... I just got the truck today and have less than 30 miles on the clock. Thanks.

XL, XLT, LARIAT?
yea, when they light up it reflects on the windshield like a HUD
little to the left of steering wheel center.

I have an XL and they come on for about 10 seconds when I start the truck.

I guess your warning is in the form of a message alert in your left productivity screen.
Oddly enough my Ford service dept didn't know what it was, I had only driven the truck to the insurance company and the a few blocks home when I asked the question after noticing it.
Thanks to all!

They will scare the hell out of you when they go off when a vehicle ahead makes a right turn.

I would rather have the Dashboard LEDS than the left Productivity LCD. Those dashboard LCDs really get one's attention.
