My neighbor asked me why I didn't get the Rivian instead. As if the Rivian is THE truck that everyone has been pining for. It's ok. He's an electric vehicle fan boy and he believes nothing is more sacred.

I answered his question with this: an electric truck or car does not fit my needs because I like to go on long adventure trips far from charging stations. And if I did want an electric truck, I would prefer to have one made by a major manufacturer that knows how to build trucks, like the Ford F150 Lightning or at most, the Hybrid F150. There's no way in hell I'd buy a truck from an unknown manufacturer. When even Tesla can't make it to the top 10 most reliable vehicles list, they are currently at the bottom of the heap, I have no illusions Rivian is going to be much better.

But congratulations on your deposit. I really do hope the Rivian is a success. Amazon plans to use the Rivian platform for their delivery vehicles.

Why do people spend 40K on a "lousy" vehicle. I work hard for my money and I would spend it on something I love!

The Rivian is an interesting vehicle for sure! A bit out of my price range but pretty cool looking.

Precisely what I did. Put a deposit on an F150 Lightning a couple of months ago. I like my 2021 Ranger, but its a lousy pickup truck. Nice car-ish vehicle, but not good as an actual pickup. So presuming I actually get a Lightning delivery next year, I'll trade the almost new Ranger right in!
Your opinion of the Ranger is so wrong at so many levels.

It is a body on frame, with fully boxed frame rails for strength. It can carry around 1,500 lbs on the bed and tow 7,500 lbs. with the Trailer Tow package. It has a solid axle, leaf sprung rear suspension so that it can do those things above. The Ranger just happens to be a mid-size truck, which is equivalent to the size of the F150 15 or so years ago.

Car-ish vehicle? So what do you plan to tow over 7,500 lbs? Do you plan to carry 1,500 lbs. on your bed? Seriously....

FYI a base F150 tow rating is under 7k lbs. So it must not be a real truck.

Ok, I'll bite. The Ranger is car-ish in what ways? Certainly not ride or interior. Tows and hauls as much or more as the full-size trucks from previous decades, including the 2008 F150 I had. It's almost 18 feet long. It's almost too tall to fit in a garage.
Opinions are like a-holes: everyone has it. The ranger is car-ish because it doesn't say "F150" on the side and isn't as big as a boat.

Folks: this right here is a REAL truck.

Nope I’m real and have a real interest
The list of questions I think will help with this decision
Can you wait potentially up to 1 year for this vehicle to be delivered?
Do you have the ability to install a 220v charging outlet near your parking area to charge your vehicle?
Does a Rivian with around 300 miles of range fit your daily/weekly needs?
Do you need to tow or drive long distance?

This reminds me of back when Ford released the new body style 1997 F-150 . People thought it didn't look as tough . Ford even put a few new style bodies on the previous models running gear and had focus groups rate the towing characteristics compared to the previous models . A high percentage said the new truck did not tow nearly as well even though nothing was different except the body .

People just had preconceived opinions about the new rounded body of the new truck . That's the main reason we have the big squared off trucks that we have today .

Until they figure out battery chemistry that won't lose range due to quick charging or cold weather I'm definitely keeping my gas shit.

I can buy a 250k mile 20 year old ice vehicle and it's just gonna burn oil.

Far enough in the future though.. that 250k mile 20 year old electric car is going to have a range of 32 miles unless you want to spend 5500$ on a new battery.

Used vehicle shopping is going to suck in the future.

I looked at the Rivian, but its also a lousy pickup truck, and too small to be useful for really anything other than showing off to friends that you actually have a Rivian. Too many gimmicks for me to take it seriously.

I was actually considering the Lordstown Endurance as its dimensions are very close to my dearly departed Dodge Dakota, but they actually put a speed governor on it at 75 MPH, which is simply bonkers.

So its F150 Lightning for me......

That was when I started buying trucks for my business. They actually came out a little early that year as I got mine just after Memorial Day in '96 and I loved the new rounded body style. I had one of the first ones in my area and everyone seemed to really like the new look. I've towed my sleds with them all over the N'East and Canada and they were great trucks. Personally I don't like the squared off look and don't like they're going back to that style now. Funny how things seem to go full circle. ?
