Let's keep track of Remaining Oil Life... It would be interesting to see how / what the system is tracking, and with enough data from folks on this forum we should be able to figure it out.

Post up the following...

1.0 Remaining Oil Life
2.0 Months Your Truck Has Since It's Last Oil Change.
2.1 New Truck? Post the build date and date of purchase
3.0 Miles Since Your Trucks Last Oil Change (or current miles if no oil change has been done).
4.0 Done any towing or hauling?
5.0 Weather been below freezing since the last oil change?

Thanks,

John

* Remaining oil life is 24% or 2600 miles
* No oil changes since purchased
* No oil changes since purchased
* Done a fair amount of towing...usually a weekend or two a month hauling around a cargo trailer although that'll taper off now due to weather and less shows.
* Weather never gets below freezing here, really.

* Build date - 1/18/19
* Purchased - 3/31/19

A Preliminary review appears to show that the Remaining Oil Life Monitor is pretty much just a timer.

See how there is very high odometer estimates for newer trucks, and low odometer estimates for older trucks? That's because the amount of time the truck took to get from the factory to your home throws off the calculation. But as time rolls on, that time is less significant.

If it was solely based on how you drive, that wouldn't matter.

But we need more data over a longer period of time. Still interesting (at least I think so).

Let's keep this thread going.
  • As the months roll on post up your data again.
  • At the first oil change post up your data again.

That was my second oil change. First at 2k, second at 10,500, truck currently has 14,622. Definitely not just a timer, otherwise it would show 79%. Also not just a mileage counter as 4100/10000 would mean I've used 41% of the oil life and would have 59% remaining.

I fall into the category that allows me to get the maximum oil life out of my vehicle, and affirms to me that my stealership is in fact attempting to rip me off and my oil monitoring system is accurate in its calculations (not just ticky tock time frame)
I would classify myself as the same. How are you testing your oils to determine "maximum life"? The concept of using a time-based metric to guide oil life is ridiculous unless you're restoring classic cars which may age out the oil.

On my performance car ('06 Mitsubishi Evo with substantial modifications and track time), I would conduct regular oil analysis to determine what "maximum oil life" actually was based on usage. Through sampling, I found that when using Amsoil high zinc 5x30, which is advertised as a 10K mile interval oil, that at approximately 6,000 miles I would start to have chemical breakdown of the shear characteristics within the oil.

On my 1961 Thunderbird the oil was changed in March of 1998, and the next change was July of 2017. Ironically that was at about the 3,000 mile mark, but the oil had aged out well before then.

For those interested in actually knowing what service intervals they should be following with their real-world usage of the truck based on analysis of their virgin oil, and by sending in samples at various mileage readings, Blackstone labs is a fantastic resource for you!

Thanks for the information.

When you did your second oil change @ 10,500 miles, was that based on the onboard oil life monitor saying it was time for an oil change? So you had 8,500 miles on the second oil change?

Nope, I donā€™t remember where it was but I changed it a tad early since my truck is tuned.
