Very dumb question, If I have 4 x 4 on my Ford Ranger 2022 XLT can I just add the switch for the rear locking differential or do I have to buy a rear locker?

You would need to get a locker. The differential is open, if you don't have a button (locker).

You will need the entire locker as well. If your truck did not have the option, then it does not have it what so ever. Yes it will be a spendy thing to do, but if you frequently go OffRoad then it will be useful to have.

There's a lot of threads on front and rear diffs here if you search for them

I'd like to put a locker in the front of mine at some point but it's going to cost some bucks to do it

Interesting that it didn't have one, over here all 4x4 models come with the locking rear diff. And very handy it is too!

Adding an aftermarket locker like the Yukon above or an ARB air locker would be easier.
But not THAT easy. ARB's instructions say that the ring gear is welded to the carrier so you have to get a new 3.73 ring and pinion for a Jeep Gladiator that uses the same axle.
I have an STX 4x4 but I don't off-road it, I have it for snow and wet boat ramps so 4wd with open diffs and traction control is good enough.

Between the price of this, a new gearset, install kit and labor.... Dude would be way better off buying a complete locking axle from Ford and DIYing it in the driveway.

Selling the stock axle would recoup a decent amount of money as well.. once there's a buyer for it.

Search on Car-Part.com for a good used rear axle assembly with the locker. Just in our area alone there’s a bunch. Three of them with 30-60K mileage and in the $500-700 range . You would just have to wire it up after swapping yours out. Sell your old one to recoup some cost.

Don't know if it was already mentioned, but the axle shafts between the open diff and locked diff are different. So add those two parts into the equation at about 300$ per for the ones that go with the E-locker. Not sure if all the wiring is present on your truck either.

I only know this because I recently replaced one of my axle shaft assemblies and had to dig into the part numbers.
