Hi everyone. Recently got a 2021 Fx4. For whatever reason is makes a rattling noise coming from behind the rear right tire. It sort of sounds like metal clanging around.

Could this is a blown shock at 17k miles? I checked the spare tire and muffler and didn’t find anything. Happens even over really small abrupt cracks, not always over larger compressions. Is constraint on rough dirt roads.

Thanks!

You're better off replacing them with something aftermarket even if they aren't blown.

Check the shock bolts. I had a rattle that matches what you described and it ended up being one of the shock bolts worked loose and was causing the rattle. Tightened it back up and problem was solved

Zip tie the spare tire chain so it doesn't rattle. Then hit some bumps. Its likely the culprit.
Yeah that's what I thought at first, but did a similar test with a carabiner and it didn't change the sound though a zip tie would be much better.

Sweet thanks. Yeah I just ordered some new Eibach struts to level the front and improve the ride. Just took it on a 700 mile road trip and man anything feels like it would be an improvement to the suspension. My brother was with me and he drives a F250 and was like "I thought you were just being picky but this ride sucks". Loose shock bolt would only add to it.

I recall a recent similar post and the exhaust heat shield turned out to be the source of the rattle, so you may want to check that as well.

Mine had the clanking in the front right going over bumps, but oddly enough after the new tires and Alignment it feels different and sounds more solid .... I was just living with the noise LOL
the clanking started after Mr.Tire did my last Alignment 4000 miles ago we all know how that ended :( it was probably something they left lose, anyway I got new tires and Alignment at Big-E-Tires ...
