Can anyone tell me why some Rangers have thin rectangular back up lights and others have big square ones? My 2020 has the squares and so far it's the only one I've seen.

Model year differences? I think those are the same as the international version. My 2019 has the dual rectangular clear areas.

To my understanding it really has to do with the tail lamp housing being LED or halogen light styles. To my understanding the XL is the only one with the halogen tail lights and that makes the biggest difference

Mine is an XL with the STX package.

To my understanding all the STX package does is change a few things inside the cab. Other than that it doesn't really change much and I feel it's a package not worth buying. But that's my own opinion
