Just got back from the test drive event in San Jose. I was talking to the lead of the event and she said that they drove the trucks from Michigan to San Jose pulling a 6,200lb trailer and was getting 9MPG. The people following her without trailers were getting anywhere from 24-32MPG depending on how "heavy" they were driving.

Super impressive!!

I loved the test drive event. I'm definitely going to be buying the new Ranger!!

Did they mention what kind of gas they were using? Regular gas (87 octane)?
Sorry, I didn't happen to ask. But I would assume Premium since that's what other ecoboost engines "recommend".

Not bad, better than I expected, I can't wait for the official word from Ford, guessing it will be somewhere in the ballpark of what your reported

Premium fuel recommended for towing/hauling per the owner's manual

Yes, Operator's Manual states the engine will run on 87 octane. However, as pointed out in the thread RD linked, 91 is recommended when towing. From what I understand, these new engines will tune themselves to the gas being burned after 20-30 miles. If you want the best performance out of this engine, you'll need to run 91 octane. I'll be pulling a 2,300# boat around south Florida and will be burning 93.

2019 Ford Ranger: Unconfirmed Real Image Show over 21 MPG Average

The new 2019 Ford Ranger is supposed to go on sale in early 2019, and we are getting very close to knowing everything about it. One of the crucial specs we do not yet know is the fuel economy estimate and rating. Will the Ranger be able to match or beat midsize truck class leading mpg?

The truck only has one engine and transmission combination. It’s a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder with a rating of 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

We recently received this image of a 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat prototype from an anonymous source. The average fuel economy reads: 21.2 MPG, and the source claims that this Ranger prototype was driven approximately 2,100 miles from Michigan to Seatle, Washington for an event, and the 21.2 MPG is the average from the trip. We cannot currently confirm this results from a secondary source, but averaging over 21 MPG in an optioned midsize truck is not a bad result.

Ford or the EPA have not yet announced fuel economy numbers for the U.S. Ford Ranger, but here is what the Ranger has to contend with:

  • Toyota Tacoma 4WD gas V6 – 20 MPG combined
  • Chevy Colorado 4WD gas V6 – 19 MPG combined
  • Nissan Frontier 4WD gas V6 – 18 MPG combined

Take a look at the 2019 Ford Explorer AWD fuel economy EPA rating. It’s 18 MPG city, 25 MPG highway, and 21 MPG combined. The Explorer is using a similar 2.3L turbocharged I4 engine, but it’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps, the 2019 Ford Ranger 4Ă—4 will have a rating close to the 18/25/21 MPG of the Explorer AWD, but we will have to wait and see.

If that's as accurate as my 2016 Fusion at estimating mpg's subtract at least 1mpg from the number to get closer to reality.

I just came back from the Ranger Event at Expo East and I was able to look through the display and found 22.8 and 23 mpg shown on short test drives.
I would expect better highway mileage.

So the 2019 Ford Explorer with the 2.3L Ecoboost and 6-speed transmission gets 19 MPG City and 27 MPG Highway, for a combined 22 MPG. It has a curb weight of at least 4,458 lbs.

By comparison, the 2019 Ranger 4x2 CrewCab has a curb weight of only 4,232 lbs and the more efficient 10-speed transmission.

You would think the Ranger should at least match the efficiency of the Explorer then.

Either they were all trained to say "around 21" or its true, the guy I spoke to at the CA Smart Drive event said he drove here from Michigan also and got a little over 21mpg.
