So to keep a long story short I ordered the new Raptor and the shelter green color. Well I guess most people describe it as some sort of a mixture of green and browns.

I really like my RTR Wheels I have now and they are charcoal gray. My first initial thoughts are those two colors don't really compliment each other well so I'm thinking of changing the color to a bronze or bronze category color.

I have never looked into this before but do most people find a local place to powder coat or is there a well-established company that a lot of people send their wheels into to have this done?

I don't know about powder coating wheels in particular, but I am somewhat familiar with powdercoating bicycle frames, and most people who do that end up looking up a local place to do the job.

My inclination might be to wait until you have your new Raptor before deciding exactly what color to get, though. That way you can (hopefully) hold samples up next to the paint to see what you like best.

Most likely you have a local shop, it's a pretty popular item. We have a large shop here in Whiteland, they do welding, custom welding and powder coating . They have a huge bake room, I've seen some huge commercial pieces they've coated, setting out for pickup. They have color samples of stock color chips on the wall, my guess is they stock close to 40-50 colors and they can special order.i had a custom alluminum awning made for our kitchen window, the old one was flimsy and corrugated metal. Anyway they had a brown in stock that matches some brown trim paint on the house. They either sanded or blasted the whole thing first then coated it with a primer then the brown, I think it only cost $150 to coat. They even coated several stainless steel screws I had to mount it with, just slipped a nylon washer between the screw and the awning. No corrosion. Have a very big platform feeder suspended under it. Just clean the bird poo off and clean it with automotive finish products.

They do rims/wheels all the time, I've seen several sets come and go when I've been there. We got to the point that if we hadn't found the custom rims I have on the Ranger now I was going to take my Lariat wheels in and get them coated in a bronze/goldish color.

I would try and find a local place to do it. Also I would consider putting the wheels on before powder coating them just to get another view. You might be right on whether the colors compliment each other or not. At the same time yeah might be off. I would do that before spending the money.

I powdercoated the factory 16" wheels on my old WRX for winter use. At the time I took them to an industrial powdercoater I found searching locally.

A few years back I had to have an O.Z. Ultraleggara on my FiST repaired after a pothole ate it. The local wheel repair guy I found did refinishing also and offered a huge selection of colors.

If I were doing it again I'd go to the wheel repair/refinish guy again. He did excellent work. And the finish choices were endless.

I saw someone did theirs in a bronze. I really liked the look and goes with almost any darker color. I never would have thunk it..

I bought a set of F150 silver steelies many years ago then after the tires were worn out, I had them sand blasted and powder coated for new rubber. They turned out awesome, and cost me $100/rim.

I'm relatively sure they won't sand blast aluminum rims though, so depending on the method they use to remove the current paint, may be more expensive.

Look into Cerakote.com as well. Basic same process as PC, just it's liquid and not powder. In my experience, I've had many wheels PC and because of the thickness of it, I some times ran into fitment issues with hubs and center caps. I just had a set of 996T Brembo Calipers Cerakoted for my R32, and they came out great.

Aluminum can also be chemically etched to strip clear coats and finishes. Anodize is another way to go now. They also clear coat over base if you want a glossy finish. Lots of colors to choose from but the gold and bronze ones really pop. And that finish doesn’t flake or chip off.

I have glass bead blasted and powder coated a set of aluminum wheels with a Eastwood kit that came out great. There are cleaning agents and a phosphate bath needed before pre heating and priming for a permanent job. An old electric oven just fits one at a time. Should be easy to find someone local to your area and if they have the color in stock it can save a min buy. Eastwood has quite a few colors also.

You'll be amazed how many small shops will do powdercoat. I had a set of Enkei wheels for a Mustang done a few years ago. An Exhaust Pro owner's son did it as a side business, and they turned out awesome. Even had him do the metal valve stem barrels. I chose a gunmetal color he had in stock to reduce cost of his min-order of a specific color.
Talk to car and truck guru's in your area, go to car shows, etc - you'll find a local shop for an outstanding job.
