Haven't had my Ranger for a full week yet. Less than 500 miles and this happens on the drive home yesterday.

I was wondering what was going to be my inevitable first painful blemish and the universe answered. Wasn't even close to the guy in front. Easily a 6-8 second following distance. Oh well.

That's really a bummer man. Would this be covered by a bumper-to-bumper? I know my insurance gives me a free windshield replacement, but I've been dreading a chip/crack because I love the factory glass with the little "Ranger" accent at the bottom. Hopefully if Ford will replace it, they'll put one back in with this nice little touch.

From what I've seen, insurance will cover chip repairs and is not subject to deductible. Windshield replacements are subject to deductible. At least with USAA.

I know mine covers both 100%. I have the option of the glass coverage with a deductible and my premium will be a little lower. One good thing is at least it was the windshield and not the hood or roof. It's a lot easier to fit than a huge dent.

Even if it’s covered under your auto insurance policy with non-deductible (or deductible applicable) glass coverage. You have the right most times to request OEM glass from the dealer. Not the aftermarket BS they will try to give you.

I did this with my Focus RS ($1k windshield that is different from the standard Focus and has to be imported from Germany) and it worked.

Up here in BC Canada repairs to windshield chips are free if you have glass coverage.

The question is: where on the windshield is the chip? If it falls outside of your direct driving view their is high probability it is repairable, however if it is in your direct driving view they will not. ?for you mate.

I had the same issue in the first couple weeks which then turned into a nice crack. Since then I have got two more niced chips like yours that have not cracked. These windows are not cheap to replace if you the collision detection system. Sounds like there is a calibration process that needs to be done. I have not seen a quote under 1k.

State Farm, at least in New Mexico) does not cover chipped windshields. If you have comprehensive glass coverage, it doesn't matter—the windshield replacement will be covered.

One thing to remember. The glass is modern vehicles which have lane-keeping technology, use a softer glass than what used to be the standard. As a result, sand pits are a way of life, and in some cases, you'll be replacing the glass even is it isn't cracked and/or chipped.

Mine (for my Transit Connect) covered full price for a non-Ford replacement, saying I must pay the difference if I wanted OEM.
I told them it would be OK, provided that the replacement was "substantially equal" in quality and fit. ...They sent OEM at no extra charge.

I believe the eye for this is on the backside of the rearview mirror, facing forward. At least that's what I think that thing is. I know on Subarus with EyeSight, you HAVE to get the glass replaced (or at least recalibrated) by a dealer.

This is what I was afraid of. I thought maybe the adaptive cruise integrated some of these features rather than the camera system in the cabin. Thanks for the info.

USAA chips free to fix, replacement gotta pay.
My wife's A7 needed a new windshield. They wanted $300 to "re-calibrate" the sensors. I told them no way. Replaced the glass with no re-calibration, everything works perfectly. Audi glass ain't cheap. Close to $800 just for the glass and they can stick the "re-calibration" where the sun don't shine.

We have State Farm, they replace ours, no deductible.

And, FWIW, unless you get the glass from FORD... that Ranger text at the bottom of the windshield won't be on the replacement.
