Off-Grid Camping Recommendations West of Denver

Hey all, my son and I are venturing out to visit family in the Denver area in mid-June after school gets out. We will be staying with my brother for a night in the DTC area and then doing a few nights at a campground in Granby before heading north to Wyoming and the Dakotas.

We plan to have a night or two between Denver and Granby and I'd like to find a spot or two to off-grid camp. We will be towing a 14' teardrop that has about the same ground clearance as the Ranger so while I don't want to get into hardcore off-roading heading down a two-track for a while isn't a problem.

It looks like anything off of I-70 or Highway 40 wouldn't be too far off the path.

I was browsing around on Gaia the other day but was honestly overwhelmed by the number of options available. Also I didn’t know if there were some spots I should steer clear of given that I’ll have the camper. I’m game to explore but “drive West until you have to turn around” is less appealing when towing.
