Not even 3 years yet (2 weeks till) already found rust

I'm honestly shocked. I haven't even had the truck for 3 years and I'm already developing rust in one of the black bands (anyone know what they are called?) at the top of the truck.

3 year bumper to bumper literally expires in 2 weeks.

i'd bring it in for warranty immediately- Ford is notoriously a pain in the A$$ when it comes to paint issues covered under warranty...

Thanks! A year ago I had my rear light housing replaced due to a recall, during the replacement they chipped the paint around the housing into the primer. Any chance it warranty would cover that at this point?

Should I be concerned about rust developing in that area?

Don't know bout that...
For the roof trim, check the section under Warranty/Repairs....several threads down...3 pages on the roof trim rust/bubbling. Been replaced under warranty.

Honestly it's the first time I buy a new vehicle, and I'm so far not at all impressed with the quality of the Ford ranger.

First I thought this was going to be my forever truck but now I doubt it'll actually last 10 years.

I have had excellent luck with initial quality and the rare warranty claim with Hyundai/Kia. They just don't built cars or cute utes nearly as capable of the abuse the Ranger can take.. that is why I jumped on this truck. I still have one Kia and no issues so far ::knock on wood::

All metal things rust*. If you want rust proof, get wood, it only rots.

* (ok, ok, if you wan't it rust proof, you need to invest in some interesting metals or alloys (A4) which prevent rusting. Aluminium is not one of em, since it rusts pretty much immediately (but forms a film of aluminium-oxide which is stable)).

P.S. Sorry for this, but years in university learning stuff like welding the nuclear power plant reactor control rods, called back to this post.

So, you've had the Ranger for almost 3 years, and the one small trim piece that has a bit of rust has you soured on the truck ?
Really not a major problem, and certainly not one that should make you want to give up.
Get it taken care of under warranty, and move on.
I think most here would agree that, all in all, the Ranger is pretty much trouble free. Every vehicle that is built in the thousands is bound to have some problems, from the cheapest Kia to the most expensive Mercedes. A simple piece of trim that might not have been properly prepared is no reason to fault the entire truck.
I have owned dozens upon dozens upon dozens of vehicles, and each and every one, at some point, had a problem or glitch...but as crazy as it sounds, even with all the electronics and tech advances in new vehicles, they are light years ahead of anything built in the 60's 70's, 80's, 90's.
Get it fixed and enjoy it !!!

i assumed those pieces were plastic/rubber , not metal...

i just checked mine with a magnet , it no sticky so its not metal...

Not 100% sure, but I think their aluminum or an alloy thats just coated with with a plastickey or vinyl mystery stuff.

The reason you want it handled under warranty is the job is pretty involved (removing the headliner, etc.).

Really? I was wondering how they replaced them. I am going to a Ford dealership Thursday that has a service and collision department. When I called the office lady didn't seem to know where to book me for "rust" on the roof rail/trim). She seemed to just book me with the service folks, will update how it goes.
