Those that have had problems are convinced that all will have problems.
The rest of us are split 50/50.
One thing for sure is that people with problems seek out forums to see if others also do and have advice. People without problems not so much.

I can’t stand the lazy shifting at low speed but I believe it’s the software mapping as designed. But putting it in tow haul/mode makes it feel like a regular truck. Putting it in sport makes it feel like a race car ?

I have a '19 with just over 70,000km and I haven't had any transmission issues. I do plan on getting the fluid and filter changed soon as it does see severe service use.

Even after reading all the stories on the forum about the transmissions, I am not really concerned about it. Like people have said, it has 10 speeds, so it'll be searching for fuel milage when in town. Can be overcome by using Sport mode or just selecting how high it'll shift, both of which I do frequently. Keep up with routine maintenance (don't adhere to the factory service intervals, do everything sooner), and you *should* be fine.

It does get great gas milage for what it is!

Almost 41k so far and my '21 tranny seems just fine. I do have a Livernois performance tune, not sure how that helps the tranny or not, but damn does it move!

I just bought a 2020. I drove about 6 of them. Each one of them made my wonder if this one has a bad transmission. The one I bought had me wondering too. Now that I have had it for 1500 miles I am not thinking about it much. What I do know is that the truck drives a lot better on the first tank of gas I put in rather than what it had in when I bought it. My truck was for sale for about 3 months before I bought it. Maybe the gas was a bit stale. The other thing that the trucks seem to do is a bump when you stop then go. They all seemed to do that. From reading on here it seems that the drive shaft on all of them needs greased. To make that bump it seems all you have to do is stop fast, then accelerate normally. My last 4 cars have been ones that are known to be exceptionally smooth and quiet..... and expensive. So I might be hyper critical of the ranger.

I am looking at a 2020 Lariat. I test drove 2 of them so far and the first one I thought there was something wrong with. The shifts seemed rough and as if it was constantly hunting for gears. A bit jerky and not smooth in both up shifts and down shifts. Then I drove the second one and while a little smoother, it did much the same. I am starting to think there wasn't anything wrong with the first one and maybe this is just how they are? That just seems a little crazy to me, that from the factory, the shifts are not smooth and nice.

I come from owning much older trucks which you can't even tell the thing shifted if not for the sound of the RPM change, so it's a little surprising.

Were the two I drove both problems or is this the expected behavior? Thanks!
This is the expected behavior, given the ten gears available. If you drive in Sport, shifts will be cleaner, with less hesitation. If you tune it, both Drive and Sport will be crisper, and your truck will have more power. There are lots of threads on here about tuning preferences, but I did the Ford Performance version, and am very happy with it. If you don't want to tune the truck, just grin and bear it...

:like: I agree. Although my '21 is low mileage (10600), I find driving in S or tow mode is best.

way TF back in 2006 my Ford Explorer had a 6 speed and I never had one bit of issues, until the tranny died of a catastrophic failure at 286k miles, it just worked city/highway/towing I never knew or cared what gear it was in because it just worked, never once jerked or bucked or bogged my engine down I think it was the 5R55S? and that truck got almost just as good of MPG we sure have gone nowhere with new tech in 16 years IMHO we have gone backwards :(
the only thing better is the sync3 and thats not even a sure thing if that will even work any morning there could have been an update and it might leave you singing to yourself on the way to the store

Same, I have just gotten in the habit of going right to bypass D and go to S
I also have a 21 XLT FX4 that just turned 20k
