So, new brake pads can vary from 8mm to 12mm.
Shops bring it to your attention at 3-4mm.

Use your math and plan accordingly.

So, do you have to pay $800 if you get it done? Is that not covered by 36k warranty?

PNW - do they salt the roads? if so, mileage comparisons are useless.

I live in salt city. 2020 with 14k miles. Covid and health issue kept the miles off.

'bout a year ago, I posted a picture of my rotors that showed about 3/8" that obviously wasn't in contact with the pads...

that's normal they said.. they all do that, they said....

brakes shuddered so bad I took to dealer.
dealer said; "are the front of rears shuddering" ? I don't know, I thought the rears.

They replaced rear pads and rotors as a courtesy because they are a wear item . wrong guess. they still shuddered.

Ended up getting Raybestos Element 3 pads and rotors from Rock Auto.
Learnt to do the front brakes myself.

Wish I took pics of those rotten front OEM rotors... 3/8" wasn't in contact on the outside and 3/8" on both the inner and outer on the inside of the front rotors weren't. there were deep channels where what little pad did make contact....... rotors were garbage and trashed.

FWIW, the rear pads/rotors they replaced seem to be fine. Only about 1/4" not being used on the rotors.

love the Raybestos so far. Pads use entire rotor surface and don't seem to flash rust as quick as OEM.

I'll see how they winter over.

guess it depends on what China melted down that week to make yer brakes.

Hey guys, been a while for me since posting. Hope you are all well, no new upgrades or anything but I have 30k miles and about to get oil change. A few thousand miles ago the service center at my dealer said I needed new break pads/calipers and rotors done. It’s gonna cost around $800.
Is this normal? In the past (with vehicles I didn’t love as much) I usually just replaced pads and called it a day.

30k miles (mostlycity) and a full break job when I have never had any issues seem like a normal thing to you?

Also, are there any aftermarket pads & calipers (that look fresh from the outside) available for this truck, and what would you recommend?

Thanks, I’m not a huge car/truck guy so any information you provide is well appreciated, especially when I am about deal with the scummy Ford dealer.

And here’s a recent pic of the truck for all you voyeurs. Peace!

First of all, your truck looks awesome!

That doesn't sound right to me though.
I would seek second opinion on that.
And maybe, maybe, pads. If the factory pads are ceramic as someone here mentioned (and I've heard others mention that but do not have first hand knowledge of that) you would have to do some pretty hard-core driving with extreme stopping to wear out ceramic pads that fast. Even if they are not ceramic, 30k still seems low to me. And if you replace your pads before they wear down to the wear indicators (the things that squeak and draw attention to your brakes) you should only have to turn the rotors. Some stock rotors are cheap and thin and can't handle being turned even once, I'm not sure about Ranger factory rotors, my wife's Mazda was like that from the factory. She goes through brakes like I go through oxygen and we have never replaced calipers on her car. And she drives that thing like she stole it.

But calipers? That is definitely bullshit, I promise you. I've replaced the front brakes on my old Ranger probably 5 times in the 23 years and 280,000 miles I had it and always used ceramic pads. Only had to get new rotors once and the factory calipers were still working perfectly when I sold that truck.

Also, $800.00 for pads, rotors and calipers plus labor is ridiculously cheap and sounds sketchy to me.
Get a second opinion.

If your brakes are working just fine and aren't making noise AND if your truck isn't pulling to one side while briskly stopping, you probably are fine.
Try a good shop who you trust.
If you don't have one, find one and make friends with the manager/owner.
They will appreciate your business and probably shoot a lot straighter than this dealer you are dealing with.

But full brake overhaul at 30? I'd call bullshit on that. Especially on the calipers, that's utter nonsense.
I'd expect I'll be changing my pads and hopefully NOT the rotors around 60k based on my prior experiences. And I promise I won't be doing that work myself. I swore off wrenching when I sold Old Blue and bought Blue Dream.
And ALWAYS use ceramic pads.
Hope this is helpful.

Does anyone around here know for certain our trucks come stock with ceramic pads?
Interested to know that.
And here's a pic of Blue Dream, she's a 2022 with about 13k on her so far. I'm in love.

30K seems abnormally low mileage, so definitely go for a second opinion. A lot of shops and home gamers always replace rotors when they do pads (or at least have the rotors turned if they have enough meat on them).

If you have a dial indicator, if you have less than .002" runout on the friction surface, I would just replace the pads. (if they were below min thickness).

Hey thanks for all the advice. I called and will go get a second opinion tomorrow. The place I called said that it sounded abnormal for the full package as well, but I guess I will find out.

appreciate you guys. 👍🏼

I had to get new rears at 40k, just the pads, rotors were okay. Calipers stuck and the inside pads were worn down. I've seen on another Ranger board where this is a consistent problem with the rear calipers. I would get a second opinion though if they're telling you all four brakes are bad.

In my state we have annual vehicle inspections where they check your brakes, among other things.

If it's the OEM brakes and they are going to replace them with factory, then I'm going to say don't do it, my 19 had a little over 24,000 miles on it when the brakes began to fade, swapped out the factory junk with powerstop rotors and pads, different trunk, BTW the rotors chipped a glaze or hardened layer off them, and the pads were better then 60%, do not replace your brakes with factory parts unless they are free, and if can do it yourself pads and rotors will be less then $800.

Update us on what the second opinion came up with!
Second opinion said the front pads were 50% and rear were 40% - with the rotors, perfectly fine. I feel like I want to sell my Ford because I don’t feel like I can trust our service center here. Now I almost wanna get a third opinion since the first two were far off, and see which one I can trust.

I love my truck, but damn dealerships. They are the worst.

I’ve had dealers keep telling me “you need new brakes” every 30-45k, but those actually lasted 80k+ each set so they can definitely be full of it sometimes!

Thanks for the update. If you love the truck you have to keep it & enjoy it! Just stay away from that dealer.

im not really going to get rid of it, but I’m in Alaska. This dealer is the only one in the area. That’s how they can get away with this shit.

Please report them to the Ford reps in that area. They need a visit from them or the Better Business Bureau. 😠

Brakes are not warranty items so no need to use a dealer for them.
Ask the counter guy at your auto parts store which is the best independent shop .
