We have an XL, so it has the smaller multi-function display.

Nice sunny day, no clouds, headlights off. Pulled in to Home Depot and parked the truck, stereo playing off a USB drive. Turned the truck off, left the key in the ignition and ate a chicken salad sandwich for lunch, while listening to the stereo. Multi-function display is light blue with black text showing what song on the USB is playing.

Opened the door to dump some breadcrumbs on the ground, and the stereo shuts off (never touched the key in the ignition). Close the door, turn the stereo back on and the multi-function display is now black with gray letters?

Why did the screen color change?

Yes, that's the grayed out screen. However it happened at noon in bright sunlight, with no clouds?

Oh man, I hope it works out.

If the night time sensor is doing it, your “Auto” headlights would be activated too. If that works off the camera, maybe the windshield is dirty. Just a thought - good luck.

Any chance your lunch paraphernalia was on the dash, blocking the sun load sensor?

Clean windshield... headlights off.

So you had ignition off and you were in the 10 min or so accessory delay before opening any door. Then you opened the driver door and stereo shuts off. Normal to here.
Then you closed door and screen changed and started playing without touching the key?
Correct?
It shouldn't have started playing when you closed door.

Can't help with the screen thing. Fluke?

I turned the stereo back on. The screen was blue initially, then it changed to grey.

I replicated this yesterday. I think it's "Make Out" mode. ?
