I wonder if, since cold air is denser an makes more HP, does the ecm add fuel to the cold air packed cylinders to keep the target afr adding a little to the increased fuel usage. Guess I'm thinking several little things add up to a 4 mpg drop in the coldest conditions I experience.

As I've been reading this thread I've had similar questions. Cooler air is denser - more O2. Also once up to operating temp and in closed loop mode it would seem the engine could care less. But no doubt there is an outside air temp sensor that proves me wrong.

...also, what is afr? ....to lazy to Google it.

Duh, of course. And your theory makes sense. I've never owned a vehicle.....carb, MPI, etc that didn't suffer fuel economy in the bitter cold.
