Tailgate pads are easy but in my experience they're really bad on the frame paint. There are a few spots of bare metal on my bike's down tube from tailgate pad and latchit rack use. I only use a thru axle mount now.
Just place some frame protection on the area of the frame where it will rest. Thats what I do with all my nice bikes never had any issue with paint rubbing off on my hitch mounted rack.

I've been trying to figure out the same thing for a hard tonneau cover. Don't care much for the hitch mounts for off-roading and don't want to lose my bed storage either. I found this option doing a giggles search and leaning towards it. Just worried how "stable" this would be. Don't want to rip the mount out of my tonneau.

Anyone tried this?

I don't turn it off. I just live with beeping when reversing with my hitch rack. Unfortunately, the front and rear bumper sensors are both connected to the same switch. If you turn off the rear, then you lose front proximity sensors too.
yeah, you do. I can turn them back on if I need them when parking. but when backing up with bikes over the tailgate, I turn the sensors off.

Have not tried, but have seen similar examples out and about. It's not an original idea. Like that guy did, I think it's smart to make sure that the system is reinforced. I usually see this setup used on the metal folding tonneau covers because most ppl aren't going to reinforce their lighter duty covers sufficiently.

I probably see more bed-height cross bar and rack setups, though. I probably would have done that system if I didn't need a rack above cab height to hold boats since I already have a pair of 1upUSA roof trays that are currently not attached to anything (they used to be on the wife's subie before the Thule rack on her car rusted itself into oblivion).

Yeah that totally works as well. Regardless, my preference is to avoid touching the frame at all and either have it fully enclosed in the bed or use a tray style hitch rack. As a bonus it looks cool when the bike is mounted up in the bed!

Here's another option. I got the RockyMounts rack kit for the Ranger.

Big fan of this axle mount - not a big fan of the cost! Gonna draw up a copycat and see if my machinists at work can't make me one in their down time. Other thru axle mounts are such garbage that it'd be worth the money if I didn't have access to a machine shop.

It could definitely be made cheaper and stronger with Kindorf/Unistrut and some bolt-on axle mounts. I decided to buy this as my list of projects was bigger than the time I had to be creative.

Frame protection? Are we still talking about mountain bikes?
Yeah, clear 3M or similar protection for bike frames. Useful in high contact areas, like where a frame touches a rack.

has anyone used a variation on this? 1663687118030.png
(picture is linked to manufacturer)

I have a travel trailer, and the rear bumper is such that mounting bikes to that is a no no. (IE a 4 bike rack can start to bend it per the manufacturer) which means soon I will need to put 3-4 bikes in the bed of the truck. 2 adult and 2 kid sizes. I have a lined bed not worried about scratches, just stacking it all in securely.
I bought one to use on my 2001 Ranger, but forgot it's a flareside so it didn't fit. I kept it though knowing I was in the market for a new Ranger, so I'll test it out when it comes in.

One of my colleagues has done that exact think on his tri-fold cover for his F-150 Raptor. He had done the same think on his last truck. Says he has had good luck with both.
I didn’t do this because I have a roll cover, with slats instead of the larger panels. You also lose the ability to open the cover when there are bikes up there. If that is not a cause for concern, go for it!

That's what I have is the tri-fold. Not being able to open the cover doesn't really matter to me, I rarely open it without a bike on, lol. Thanks for the info.

yikes. I don't think I'd be okay with stuff moving.
Doesn't really move but has a little flex in it. Instead of your frame rubbing on anything, the whole unit has a little play to absorb any big dings from pot holes etc. If you don't have a carbon frame then you prob don't have to worry about that.
