My factory tires are finally getting thin enough I can justify new shoes for the truck... and with Labor Day sales coming up, I've been doing a bunch of research into which tire and what tire size I want to go with.

I think I've settled on 265/65/18 (keeping the factory wheels) for the size - it's just a touch larger than factory, but I've got the front leveled so I should not have any rubbing or need to remove crash bars etc. These are just a hair smaller than 32".

So with size decided - now I have to choose which tire I want. I had more or less decided on the Wildpeaks based on what I've read on this forum from other Ranger owners, but my local Discount Tire has the Mickey Thompsons for the exact same price. These appear to be the new kid on the block, and I can't find much in the way of actual test/reviews of them, particularly how they stack up against the Wildpeaks...but all the info I can find on them has been very, very positive.

Does anyone here have the Mickey Thompsons on their truck? How do you like them?
I'm concerned about road noise - both tires appear to be fantastic performers off road, but I want something well-mannered on-road as well.

Anyone have a strong opinion on the Wildpeaks vs. the Mickey Thompsons?

If you live in Idaho, I expect you get snow and cold weather. The Wildpeaks are 3W which means they're good for snow and ice driving.

I have had 3 sets of Wilpeaks AT3W on 3 different vehicles, and they are amazing on and off road.

I really like the looks of the M T, just afraid they will ride rough. I think you could go wrong with either tire.

the micks will be great off road, tough tire. the wildpeaks will be more road friendly but serve well off road too. if you drive the ranger to work or on road most of the time the falken tires may be the better choice. if the truck is play toy for off road or adventures the mt .

It is my daily driver, so I'm leaning towards the Wildpeaks.

The prior generation of the MT's were a bit noisy, but this new version (apparently only release in Jan of this year, I believe) has a revised tread that is supposedly much quieter on-road.

It may come down to which one has the better Labor Day deal. ?

Both the Falken Wildpeak AT3W and the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT are solid tires that preform well and are both 3 peak snow flake rated.

What is important for you in regards to your next tire. also what type of terrain will you be riding in.

If we can help you in any way please let us know.

Thanks for the extra info! I care about road noise (I want a quiet tire that does not drone) but also need good off road and snow performance. This is my daily driver, but I take it off road into the back country often, in all seasons. So I need a tire that is both well-behaved on-road but also does a great job in dirt/mud/snow/mountains.

I note that the Discount Tire website does not have official ratings for the Mickey Thompsons yet, so it's been difficult to compare them to the Wildpeaks. Do you have a sense of whether one tire is better / worse than the other in any areas?

Thanks!

Wildpeaks for the win.

I had them on my Ranger and loved them. Would totally buy them again. I have BFG KO2's now and they are not as good, but the Wildpeak did not come in the size I wanted.

The Wildpeak we're great on ware, ride, low road noise, and great traction dry and wet.

These are with 55k on them.

@quangdog, You are correct the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tire does not have test data loaded up yet.

Both are solid tires that should fit your needs.

I'd at least compare their weights, which will give you a sense of performance hit and MPG reduction. For some reason, the Falkens are heavy for an AT, compared to other ATs. I was seriously looking at Falkens, the Toyo AT3 then I found out about Firestone Destination XTs. In a C load, true 32" tire (255/75/17), the Firestones weigh 42#. Impressive. Not sure if there's some inherent sidewall weakness but I've not read that anywhere.

Anyway, if reviews are the same, wet/dry/snow/dirt traction is the same, price is the same, I'd look at weight too.

Edit: I await my truck order, I've not ordered nor driven any of these tires. This was just research on my part.

Glad to hear the Falken Wildpeaks are tried and true in the real world.
Just not too long ago these tires were sleepers as far as AT tires go, and they were somewhat affordable. The word is out that they are very good and now they are Not so inexpensive.
I think these will replace the stock Hankooks on my Lariat when I swap out the tires next Spring.
In my experience, the Hankooks work pretty decent on dry pavement and even rain but last winter I was not very confident with them on snow and especially iced roads...and I don't drive like an Ahole in snowy conditions...even in 4WD.
When it comes time for tires, the Firestone Destinations will be my Plan B.
I had a set a while back on my '94 Cherokee and they are very good IMO
Just don't have the $$ for new shoes yet ?

I have looked at weights - there is a very slight edge to the Mickey Thompsons. They are listed at 45lbs, with the Falkens at 46.1.

The factory original Dynapro (granted, at a slightly smaller size of 265/60/R18) clock in at a svelte 40 lbs - but both the Mickey Thompsons and the Falkens will be a substantial capability upgrade, so I'm ok with a bit more weight.

Chart for the Mickey Thompsons:

Around our neck of the woods. (I live in Boise, was in Meridian earlier today), I see more Wildpeaks than any other A/T tire. Guys that do a lot of higher speed desert stuff really seem to like the M/T line.

Based on all the 4X’s I see around here with the Falkens, I would say those are more of a sure thing when it comes to longer term satisfaction for you use profile.

Its already clear that between the two many have shown that the Falken is a good performer in the snow. As the Mickey Thompson I believe its a pretty new tire so its hard to say. With new tires it can go either way. With that said even with a 3 Peak snow flake its no guarantee that the tire will preform well in the snow. This is something I have learned already.

That said one tire I really like and might(key word here) be available in that size is the Firestone Destination XT. I ran it on the Ranger and a work van and never had any issues. I also plan to run them on the old 1993 Pathfinder. Probably the best tires for winter driving for an All-Terrain but without testing done with comparison between other tires it could be speculation.

I say go with the MT's. I'm on Duratracs right now, and really want to go to Baja Boss, and a review from a Guinea Pig actual user would be great before I commit. ;)
