Is my ProCal just a brick in a box?

I found a ProCal in my truck when I bought it used about a week ago. I confirmed with my service department there is no tune on my truck. I don’t want to plug it in, no need since it has all the power I want or need.

I’ve heard “if” there is a tune on it that it may not read another truck if it was plugged into mine at one time. If there is no tune on it can someone use it and download a tune to it for a price? There’s no voucher slip in the box.

Is it worth anything as is?

You can plug it in and use all the gauges and diagnostics. If it's the one that was originally in your truck, you can load the tune that is in it. You should be able to revert back to stock if you don't like it.

Sorry for this, but Sing it with me.

Not gonna get you a diamond ring
That sort of gift don't mean anything
Not gonna get you a fancy car
Girl, ya gotta know you're my shinin' star

Not gonna get you a house in the hills
A girl like you needs somethin' real
Wanna get you somethin' from the heart
Somethin' special girl

It's a brick in a box
A brick in a box babe
It's a brick in a box
Ooh, a brick in a box girl

OK, I'll let myself out.

I’m leaving the truck as is and I don’t want to plug it in, I got an 8 year 100,000 mile CPO warranty from Ford and (I know there are different opinions on this) I want to take zero chances of them having a reason to not honor it.

Maybe I should just give it away and see if someone could use it. If they can then they could give me a buck or two.

OMG. Plug it in and at least see if it’s tuned.

Ship it to me. If I can load a tune I'll hook you up.

I would see if I could tune it and play dumb after that. If it was tuned, Ford already has a record of it.

But if that was previous to them establishing the CPO warranty it shouldn't matter, right?

Whereas tuning it now might.

I would HIGHLY recommend you take this to the dealership and let them know you are concerned that the vehicle was previously tuned and may cause you warranty issues in the future. They can tell if the truck has been tuned or not, but they don't necessarily have details on the tuning. So if you have an engine failure, and they check to see if it was tuned previously, they could potentially blame the tune and deny your claim.

Small chance of it happening, but by having it documented, you should be ok.

I did, they said there was no tune on it when I purchased it, they didn't say if there was on there previous to me purchasing it. With no tune on it at the time of purchase I am clear of any warranty issues (I have that in black and white in my warranty paperwork) and that is why I don't want to even plug it in at this point.

The dealership cannot tell if it was tuned, but Ford can. It needs to be notated somehow that the vehicle had the Ford Performance tuner in the vehicle when purchased and may have been tuned prior to your purchase.

That way, if you do happen to have the type of failure Ford would try to deny due to the engine being tuned, and they discover the vehicle had been tuned and try to deny your warranty claim because of it, a lawyer could easily use that information to win in court.

As I said though, all of this has a very small chance of actually happening. But if it does happen, you will be extremely grateful for having documentation that it may have been tuned prior to your purchase. At that point, Ford would have to prove that you put a tune after you purchased it.

Of course, if you decide to actually tune the truck, don't worry about it.
