We’re thinking about heading up to Glacier NP and also to Yellowstone NP and Grand Teton NP. So where I need help is trying to find a place to stay in all these areas that aren’t stupid crazy expensive. Doing a quick search online (booking.com) the prices are pretty expensive but I realize it’s a prime month (June) and that’s probably what the rates are.Someone we met on our trip told us they were just at Yellowstone and to stay in West Yellowstone as it’s a great area but we never got any info as to where they stayed. It looks like you could even stay in ID but having never been there I don’t know if this will work?

Steve @IdahoRanger I’m not sure where you are in respect to this area but do you know if there’s anywhere in ID that’s within a short distance to Yellowstone? We’d be willing to cut out Glacier NP if we had to but we really wanted to try and do all three of possible. For those who have been to these areas how much time would you allow at each of the three places? We’re also thinking of heading back over to South Dakota (time permitting) because we both really loved it there. We’re thinking 2-4 days at Grand Tetons, 5-7 days at Glacier, 5-7 days at Yellowstone and possibly 7 days (or more) back in South Dakota. Does this sound right or should I adjust our time at any one place? I already found a place in SD which is a cabin that we’d most likely stay at so any help with the other 3 areas would be greatly appreciated!

Glad you guys get to FINALLY do some traveling, you deserve it, it's been what ? Hundreds of , maybe even thousands of minutes since your last trip???
We were ready the day we pulled back into the driveway from the last one.

The problem is these popular areas book out a year in advance. Some places that I've checked are already sold out for June 2023 so you have to be quick or you'll get stuck with either the lower end hotels or the over priced ones.

Search for BnBs instead of hotels. You could start by searching BNB.com. We recently went to Tennessee and for the 4 of us, in a nice 2 bedroom house cost us about $120 per night.

Thanks and I'm open to that too but I need to know specific areas to look at. Someone we met mentioned West Yellowstone but everything in that area is very expensive. So I'm hoping to find somewhere maybe just outside that and don't mind driving 30 minutes or so.

roof top tent solves alot of issues.
Not an option as we both hate tent camping! Besides I need my truck bed for work and I have no storage here once I'm done using it.

If hear that if you stop and check with one of the Bison at Yellowstone, that they can put you up in a treehouse for the night.

Bison tosses man into a tree at Yellowstone.
? I never did have a tree house when I was a kid. lol

We saw that the other day and should be in the Darwin thread. Some people like to get right up in their faces just to get a picture as we saw in Custer State Park.

If you're going to cut something out, I wouldn't make it Glacier. I've been to all them multiple times and Glacier is the best IMHO. But just due to sheer size and area to cover, I would definitely allot more time for Yellowstone than other places. I loved the Black Hills but not sure more than 3-4 days would be worth it.

Although, I will admit, when my wife and I have gone out there we fly in with our camping gear and pretty much only stay a max of two nights at any given site. So we may be more transient than most would want.

Perhaps this is the time to purchase a (relatively) cheap used travel trailer? Just the basic stuff? You've got all year to tweak/upgrade/make-it-yours/find places to install dampers. Or is that as much of a hassle to park as finding a hotel seems to be?
Besides...you DID at one time want one!

Good suggestion Chris and we thought about that as an option too. Yes the storage is a factor and is pricey so that's an added expense if we end up not using it a lot. Plus you run into the same problem of finding a good camp grounds and I'm guessing they're not cheap if you're in these highly sought after destinations.

Before buying one I really want to rent one a few times to make sure we like it. Then add in I'm changing dealers on my Bronco order and it "might" come in next year so that'll be another expense. I don't want to have to work to hard.

Thanks for the info Clay. We just returned from South Dakota and really enjoyed it there. I have a cabin on hold at a good price right now and while a week or more might be a little long we're looking to try and relax a little more on next years trip. We were on the go 28 out fo the 30 days and while it was fun it was tiring at times. I wish we liked to camp as this would be much easier.

Glacier is the one that's very high on our list so I'd hate to cut it out but it seems like it's the one with the most limited accommodations. I'm also thinking of just doing Glacier then heading over to SD this year then the following year doing Yellowstone. This way we won't be rushed and I want to see as much of Yellowstone as possible. All this info really helps...Thx!

Your plans look good to me Dave. One thing, it's expensive anywhere around Yellowstone. Don't worry about the prices, and just enjoy yourselves. Times is short on this earth, so we need to enjoy every minute we have.

BTW, we usually stay in Livingston north of Yellowstone. That's the way we go in on our journeys as we head north from N.C. to Hwy's 80/90/or 94 to go west. So I'm not sure about the better places to stay south of Yellowstone.

Also, I told you those road trips are addictive, and that you'll be planning your next trip before you get home from the last. Good job brother. :)

That's for sure my friend!! This past trip all started when I ordered my Bronco in IA and we were going to take this route back home. I know we've discussed this many times and were hopefully going to get ours together and meet up there. Since that didn't happen we figured why not just go anyways and we're glad we did. Annie only gets to bank so many PTO days then she loses the rest and now that she's living here she doesn't have to use them flying back n forth to Chicago.

I'll check out the Livingston area as we're not stuck on going to any one part. West Yellowstone was just something a couple told us about while we were in Bryce Canyon. Thanks for the info brother!
